Cross River Govt Inaugurates Obubra LTG-WASH To Strengthen Grassroots WASH Governance

  The Cross River State Ministry of Water Resources, in collaboration with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSSA), Self Help Africa (SHA), and the Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN), has inaugurated the Obubra Local Government Area Task Group on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (LTG-WASH) to strengthen WASH governance and service delivery at the grassroots level.  The three-day inauguration programme was held at the Obubra Local Government Council Secretariat.  Declaring the event open, the Chairman of the State Task Group on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (STG-WASH), Dr Okon Ita, said the event is "aimed towards system strengthening considering the LGA’s WASH status.” He noted that no meaningful development can be achieved without “LTG-WASH”.  The STG-WASH chairman called on the members of the task group in Obubra to serve with both hands on deck.  Dr Ita, represented by Engr Eni Nkanu, a director in the Ministry of Water Resources, pledged ...

Operation keep Calabar Clean: C'River cracks down illegal structures ... as Post Sanitation Exercise commences

  By: Sylvia Okoi The Cross River State Government is taking bold steps to transform Calabar, the State capital, into a world-class tourism hub.  As part of this effort, the Government has commenced a post-environmental sanitation exercise, led by Commissioner for Environment Hon. Moses Osogi to sustainably keep Calabar clean and green. During the January 2025 environmental sanitation exercise, Osogi and his team took a proactive approach, by directing the demolition of illegal structures, cutting down old trees, and ensuring proper waste evacuation from desilted drainages.  The Commissioner expressed disappointment at the dirty environment of most business centers in the metropolis, emphasizing the need for residents, especially business owners, to participate in the sanitation exercise as a show of community responsibility. Yala Local Government Inaugurates Taskforce to Restore Open Defecation-Free Status

  In a bid to combat the adverse effects of open defecation and restore Yala Local Government Area’s Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status, the Local Taskforce on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (LTG-WASH) has been inaugurated.  The event, which took place at the Council headquarters in Okpoma, was organized by the Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) with support from Self Help Africa (SHA). Delivering the keynote address, the Chairman of Yala Local Government Council, Dr. Fred Okem, underscored the urgent need to tackle the public health risks posed by open defecation. “This is a welcomed opportunity for us to address a pressing challenge in Yala,” he stated. “We all know our water scarcity problem. As a result, many people resort to defecating in the bush, which is an unhealthy practice. Monthly Sanitation: Govt. decries low compliance in Abi , Yakurr LGAs

Moses Osogi has decried the low level of compliance to the Statewide Sanitation Order in Abi and Yakurr Local Government Areas.  Osogi who made the observation during the supervision of the Statewide Environmental Sanitation exercise in the Central Senatorial District as part of deliberate efforts to ensure the implementation of the order across the 18 Local Government Areas, described the nonchalant attitude of motorists as unacceptable. While also frowning at the low level of participants by residents of the two area councils headquarters, Osogi expressed disappointment at their level of compliance, saying,  "I was thinking what we have been preaching has been replicated at the Urban Areas, but sadly it is not so.
