Obudu Council Boss Marks One Year in Office, Showcases Landmark Achievements

The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, has reaffirmed his commitment to transparent, accountable, and people-centered governance as he marked one year in office, highlighting remarkable achievements across key sectors of the local economy.

Speaking in a statement to commemorate the milestone, Hon. Undiandeye described his first year as a period of “steady progress and impactful service,” despite the economic constraints facing local governments nationwide. He expressed profound gratitude to God, the people of Obudu, and the Cross River State Government for their continuous support and partnership.

Undiandeye listed several completed infrastructure projects, including the grading and compacting of major streets such as Ugar Umbe Street, Ada Akinsheye Close, Silver Maris Drive, Raphael Nawa’s Street, Prof. Moses Agana’s Street and Close, and Chief Joseph Anale Street. Roads in Bekpam, Ranch Road, and Bedia areas, including Sacred Heart Primary School Road and Bedia–Ibong Road, were also rehabilitated.

The council renovated the executive chambers, secretariat, and lodge; constructed a bridge in Ukpe Ward linking rural communities; and built a box culvert in Angiaba/Begiaka Ward to improve connectivity. Additionally, mini-buses were procured to ease local transport, with subsidized fares to cushion the effect of rising costs on residents.

The administration’s urban renewal drive saw the restoration of solar-powered traffic lights, installation of streetlights, and provision of a new transformer for Indiabeb community. A generator was also donated to the College of Nursing Sciences, Obudu, to address electricity challenges.

To enhance access to potable water, solar-powered boreholes with tank stands were installed and reticulated across Begiading, Urban II, Utugwang North, Utugwang South, and Angiaba/Begiaka Wards. The Chairman also reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, promoting cleaner and healthier communities.

In line with the state’s food security agenda, the council distributed 1,000 bags of fertilizer, agrochemicals, improved seedlings, and financial support to local farmers. Youth empowerment and skills acquisition programs were also expanded, with several young people sponsored for vocational training and public service positions.

Hon. Undiandeye’s administration distributed 20,000 exercise books, 100 marker boards, and refill inks to public schools, while purchasing UTME forms and paying tuition fees for tertiary students. Adult and continuous education programs were revived to improve literacy rates across the LGA.

Healthcare and Social Welfare

In collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, the council organized free medical outreach programs targeting the aged, women, and children, alongside the distribution of food items and welfare packages to teachers.

Healthcare delivery was strengthened through the production of 20,000 patient cards and 5,000 ANC cards for 69 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs). The council also supported immunization, malnutrition interventions, and global health campaigns, including World Malaria Day and World Tuberculosis Day.

Furthermore, the Chairman facilitated the deployment of NYSC medical doctors to rural health facilities, supported the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) campaign, and ordered the appraisal of ALGON Hospital, Kikung, for renovation.

The council extended monthly stipends to widows and the elderly across all wards, and carried out several humanitarian initiatives — including clearing hospital bills for indigent patients, celebrating International Women’s Day with women with disabilities, and organizing Girl Child Day sensitization with free sanitary pad distribution.

To sustain peace and inter-community relations, Hon. Undiandeye engaged with leaders from Kwande and Vandiekya LGAs of Benue State, alongside traditional rulers, security agencies, and vigilante groups. His administration also hosted the Obudu Solemn Assembly to promote unity and moral renewal, and upgraded the annual Obudu New Yam Festival to enhance cultural tourism.

He commended the harmonious relationship with the legislative arm of the council, noting that five executive bills have been passed and signed into law to strengthen grassroots governance and local economic growth.

Reiterating his dedication to the People First agenda of Governor Bassey Edet Otu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision, Hon. Undiandeye pledged to sustain the momentum of progress.

“Our administration is committed to building an Obudu where governance truly serves the people,” he said. “This one year has been about progress, partnership, and purpose, and we will continue to work for the good of all.”

Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, was elected Chairman of Obudu Local Government Area on November 2, 2024, and inaugurated by Governor Bassey Otu on November 4, 2024.
