Rovers maintain winning streak, stun Leopard FC 3-1 in preseason friendly

By Kelvin Obambon

Rovers Football Club of Calabar has sent a powerful message to teams in the Nigeria National League that it is coming into the 2020/2021 season not to make up numbers, but to upset the stage and achieve it objective of securing promotion to the nation's elite football league.

This is evident in the team's ability to maintain winning streak in 5 matches played since it resumed preparations for the impending NNL season.

Rovers FC stunned Leopard Football Club 3-1 in a friendly encounter that took place at the Saint Patrick's football field in Calabar on Friday.

Bala Usman and Okon Samuel gave the Canaan Boys a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of the game. Josiah Daniel's conversion of a cross within the penalty area to goal in the 73rd minute sealed the fate of the division one side.

However, the scorelines changed in the dying minutes of the game as Leopard's spirited effort to have something in the bag finally paid off when Okon Etim snapped at the lacuna in Rovers defense to register his name on the scoresheet in the 89th minute.

The game which ended 3-1 in regulation time, took Rovers winning tally to 5. The Calabar based team has only drawn 1 match out of a total of 6 games played so far. 5 of the teams played are from the National Amateur Division, while 1 from the Nigeria National League.

Speaking shortly after the match, Rovers FC head coach, Samson Unuanel, reiterated that in building up the team, it was pertinent to engage clubs in the lower division.

Unuanel said with so much work already put into the team, the players are now ready to give a good account of themselves in the 2020/2021 NNL season.

He, therefore, appealed for support from the state government and Cross Riverians in general to enable Rovers FC achieve greater success in it campaign to return to the NPFL
