By Blessing Enagu

The Commander, 13 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Peter Malla has assured of the Army’s support to the Cross River State Forestry Commission in achieving the mandate of conserving the rich forests resources of the State.

Brigadier General Malla gave the assurance recently in his command when he received in audience the Management of the Cross River State Forestry Commission.

The  Brigade Commander stated that for security to be maintained, there was need for partnership among critical stakeholders, while suing for a mutual relationship with the Commission in other areas of collaboration.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Cross River State Forestry Commission, High Chief Tony Undiandeye expressed delight at the visit, noting that it was to familiarize with the Commander and congratulate him on his recent posting to Calabar.

Chief Undiandeye intimated the Commander on the challenges in the Forestry sector, citing the unwholesome activities of illegal loggers who are fast depleting the State’s forest despite the ban on logging in the State.

The Chairman narrated that Cross River holds about 50% of the last remaining rain forests in Nigeria and the State is rich in biodiversity making it one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world.

He further explained that because of the rich forests resources, the State became a pilot State for the United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Programme (UN-REDD+), which is a very strategic environment conservation effort in Nigeria.

The High Chief pointed out that illegal activities in the State's forests were becoming criminal in nature, and difficult for only the forests Rangers to manage, hence the appeal for security support when ever the Commission embarks on a clampdown exercise in the field.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of the military and other security agencies, the Commission Chairman sought for continuous collaboration with the Command while also assuring the Brigade Commander of a rewarding relationship with the Commission.

The Forestry Commission Chairman was accompanied on the visit by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Felix Ita and senior Directors of the Commission.
