By Blessing Enagu

Information Officer, Forestry Commission.

In furtherance of his afforestation drive, the Cross River State Forestry Commission Chairman, High Chief Tony Undiandeye has flagged-off the 2021 tree planting exercise beginning with the Calabar-Odukpani road in the Southern Senatorial District of the State.

Flagging-off the exercise, the Chairman noted that due to the high level of attrition in the State’s forests, there was need for regular afforestation awareness, adding that the Commission will replicate the exercise in the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts of the State.

Chief Undiandeye maintained that beyond the aesthetic value of the trees to the urban cities, the young trees have capacity to absorb carbon monoxide that is produced in an industrial city, and also help to clean up a range of pollutants as well as toxins which are emitted by industrial activities in the cities.

He further highlighted other benefits of trees to include; provision of oxygen to man, form canopies, protect watershed, prevention of desertification, flood, soil erosion and most importantly, their carbon sink role which is very vital in mitigating the global effects of climate change.

The Forestry Commission Chairman acknowledged that since industrialization cannot be stopped, likewise the production of carbon monoxide, there was need for a robust tree planting exercise across the globe in order to achieve increased absorption of carbon monoxide from our environment.

While encouraging Cross Riverians to imbibe the habit of planting trees as a result of the enormous benefits, Chief Undiandeye appreciated government for the support overtime and also appealed to government, private sectors and development partners for more support to enable the Commission continue with its statutory responsibilities.

After the flag-off, staff of the Commission proceeded enthusiastically in planting the trees along the Calabar-Odukpani area. The exercise will continue in the coming weeks, to cover Ikom and Ogoja Urban cities in the central and Northern senatorial districts of the State.
