UNICAL students to get refund for CBT, EDC other charges .....I won't sustain unwholesome practices, says VC

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, has restated the resolve of her administration not to sustain unwholesome practices in the institution.

The Vice Chancellor made the assertion in a brief interactive session with the leadership of the Students Union Government (SUG) when responding to some issues which has dominated the public space that required urgent attention and response on the part of management.

In the meeting which was a follow up on the one held earlier on Wednesday, 7th July, 2021, Prof. Obi said the time has come for the students to sincerely and assiduously work with management to improve the welfare of Nigerian students with a view to develop the university.

On Hostel Accommodation, the Vice Chancellor made allusion to the last meeting with the leaders where it was agreed by both parties that hostel accommodation be increased from the sum of N16, 500 to N21,000 to reflect current economic realities for those who want to genuinely reside in the hostels.

Prof. Obi on the mix up involving payment of both GSS and CBT registration charges by some students admitted that it was not extortion as alleged in some circles but a case of ‘unperceived grey area’ which warranted ‘approval in error’ and as such assured that those involved will get refunds.

For the EDC levy paid by students who were not in the practical year class, the Vice Chancellor said affected students have been steadily receiving their monies and that over 147 have done so already with proof of payment and that the students are paid as soon as they come to apply for the money.

The management of the institution will meet with the Student Leaders in the oncoming week to redress other issues that will be raised to promote peace, stability on campus and also engender oneness in the pursuit of giving Unical its pride of place among universities in the country.

The VC charged the students to always speak up through the right channels for their challenges to be addressed.
