UNICAL holds solemn assembly for new academic session

The University of Calabar has held her first Solemn Assembly for the 2020/2021 academic session.

The event which was held at the Institutions International Conference Centre exuded a spiritually charged atmosphere as participants actively partook in both the praise and worship, as well as prayer sessions.

In her remark, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Banku Obi welcomed all the congregants on behalf of the University Management even as she gave God all the glory for the success of the day.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the theme of the event; ‘Power to Recover’ is apt because in her words, we are gathered to recover the lost glory of the University.

“We will recover all that has been taken from the university. We will recover all the souls and raise a standard against untimely death.  Recover our students from the attraction to cultism, recover the reading culture in our students and erase all vices in the university

Prof. Obi used the occasion to thank the clergy for all they have been doing for the Institution spiritually and urged them to do more.

Taking the Opening Charge, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Michael Okom noted  that faith is Gods best gift to man, adding that the best gift of faith is salvation.

Accordingly, Prof. Okom charged staff to let their faith be strong enough that they pass the test of salvation eschewing all forms of sexual gratifications and the hydra-headed sorting.

Quoting from John 1:7, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration enjoined staff to always work in the light of Christ, especially in dealing with students.

The first and second Bible readings were extracted from the books of 2Kings 2 : 19-22 and Joel 2 : 25-27 and taken by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. (Mrs.) Angela Oyo-Ita and the Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe respectively.

The highpoint of the event was the sermon as preached by the Guest Minister, Evang. (Dr.) Mrs. Glory Nja who espoused on the 1st reading of the day.

While commending the Vice Chancellor and the University Management for obeying the word of God and Institutionalizing the solemn assembly, the officiating minister prophetically declared that God is pleased with the Vice Chancellor, adding that, as in the bible days, Unical was about to witness a total turnaround in fortunes.

She admonished members of the university community to purge themselves of all secret sins and vices so that God can use them to sweeten the waters of the institution and turned its seeming “barrenness” into productivity.

The well attended and power packed event featured intercessory prayers for the Vice Chancellor and the University Management, the staff, students, the nation, as well as, for deceased staff, students and their families.
