UNIJOS Alumni calls on FG, police to arrest perpetrators of fire incidents in UNICAL

The South South chapter of the University of Jos Alumni Association, has called on the Federal Government and the Police to investigate and arrest perpetrators of fire incidents in the University of Calabar.

The alumni body of UNIJOS made the call in a solidarity visit to the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Florence Obi in Calabar, over cases of fire outbreak in some departments in the university.

Mr Tonye Dagogo, who is the South South Zonal Coordinator of the group, said that the VC of UNICAL who is also an alumni of UNIJOS deserves all the support, encouragement and prayers she needs to run the university.

Dagogo said that the transformation agenda of fighting corruption in the university by the VC was bitting hard on those who have seen corruption as a way of living, hence Prof. Obi needs all the support she deserves to remain resolute in her drive to change the system for good.

According to him, an alumni of the university of Jos is courageous, determined, dedicated, disciplined and trustworthy, hence the personality of the VC that stands her out in what she is doing.

"Our dear VC, I want to inform you today that the entire Josites are solidly behind you in your transformation agenda in UNICAL.

"Dont allow anyone to distract you; continue the good work that you have began. We are strongly behind you. We call on all detractors to steer clear and allow you to transform this university.

"We are asking you to go ahead and strengthen the system for good. As one of us, we must stand with you always because you are fighting corruption in the system.

"We hereby call on the Federal Government and the police to fish out those behind these arson in UNICAL becuase josites will go to any length to use the legal means to protect one of us," he said.

Speaking, the VC expressed joy with the visit of the alumni association, saying that the motto of the University of Jos "Discipline and Dedication" has always made them unique wherever they are.

Prof. Obi informed them that she didn't became VC of the University of Calabar to play to the gallery of corruption, but to change the system, effect the wrongs and place UNICAL on the world map through academic excellence.

"For me as the VC, I have never followed the crowd, that is why my motto is 'stand out' because for 32 years that I have been in UNICAL, I have never received any gift from any student neither have I been sorted.

"I am grounded enough in the system to know what is going on. When I took over as VC, i knew the journey was going to be a tough one, but i know that with God on my side, i will triumph and conquer.

"I came into office at a period when Endsars protesters vandalised majority of the building in the university, I took up the challenge and fixed these buildings to keep the university afloat.

"As we speak, I have detected a lot of things that have gone wrong in the institution; I am determined to change the narrative," she said.

For those who were employed years before the VC assumed office, she said that she has visited Abuja severally to see how they can help them to be payrolled, since the Federal Government has taken over the responsibility of payrolling staff through the Integrated Payroll and Personel Information System.

She added that the matter has been taken to the University Governing Council for deliberation with a view to find a solution to it.

Also speaking, the Chairman of University of Jos Alumni Association, Calabar Chapter, Mr Freedom Ejom, called on all josites to stand behind the VC, saying that "an injury to one josite is an injury to all josites".
