International Women’s Day: NAWOJ urges women to keep advocating for their Rights in the Society

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Cross River state Chapter, has called on women to unite and keep advocating for their rights as well as take positions in leadership and decision making in various sectors of the society .
This is contained in a statement signed by the State’s Chairperson, Mrs. Umo Basi-Edet and the secretary, Maria Ewa in Calabar to commemorate the 2023 International Women’s Day with the UN theme for this year, ”DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality” with the hashtag #Embrace EQUITY..
According to the statement, the digital age represents an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate all forms of disparity and inequality and as a result women must be able to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion.
The statement has urged people to effortlessly celebrate their girls or women, women leaders and feminist achievements who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education by highlighting the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces and addressing online and ICT-facilitated gender-based violence.
It further urged Political leaders to engage more women in the political arena with a view to ensuring fairness for peace and security as well as recognize the diverse roles women play and identify the need to equip them better to advance the nation’s peace and security as fundamental factors and driver of development for nation building.
The statement called on governments, non-governmental and individuals to put in more efforts to make the digital world safer, more inclusive and more equitable to create a better future not just for women and girls, but for all humanity.
Mrs. Umo Basi-Edet wished all women a happy 2023 Women’s Day celebration and appealed that they all carry out their civic right by voting in the forthcoming election and shun violence, vote buying as well as other practices that violates the law.
