By Ntem Chris. The cross river state government has through the director general of the cross river state primary health care development agency Deaconess Mrs Abasioffiong Offiong distributed medical commodities across the primary health care facilities in Etung LGA to support the fight against the cholera outbreak in the state.
Speaking during her visit to Etung LGA, the director general of the CRSPHCDA Deaconess Mrs Abasioffiong Offiong thanked the Chairman of Etung LGA, Hon. John Etuk for supporting in the fight against the outbreak of cholera, she applauded the PHC Director of Etung Mrs Helen Odock and all the PHC staff for working round the clock to address this menace.
"The state government under the leadership of Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade in a bid to ensure that the Etung people as well as the entire state remains safe and healthy, has instructed us to come and deliver medical commodities and to sensitize the Etung people on how they can remain safe and curtail the spread of this disease. Cholera is a waterborne disease and can be easily contracted through the water we drink and the food we eat. While we continue to pray to God to help protect us, we must do the best we can to address this outbreak by first practicing good hygiene, put into consideration the kind of water we drink, we must practice regular hand washing, covering all our cooked food, and since we depend on our natural source of water for drinking we should always boil the water before we drink to kill all the microorganisms in it.
I'll wish to also solicit with the Chiefs to help make laws that could help promote good hygiene while we will continue to sensitize and create awareness to our people even those in the hard to reach areas."
The DG reassured the Etung people and the entire cross riverians that the house to house cholera sensitization exercise will continue and she will continue to be in the field to make sure that cross riverians are kept safe.
She has again thanked the state government and all partners for their tremendous support and efforts that is helping to cushion the cholera outbreak.
Mrs Abasioffiong has also called on cross riverians to continue to practice good hygiene, regular hand washing, proper closing of all drinking materials, and being careful with the water they drink stating that cholera is a waterborne disease that spreads and kills faster.
"Effective hygiene practices remains the most scientifically proven way to break the route of transmission of cholera. As simple as effective hand washing before eating, after eating, after using the toilet, before breastfeeding, etc can do a whole lot of magic." The DG added.
