APWEN Calabar Chapter Empowers Young Engineers and Collegiates on International Day Of Girls in ICT


The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Calabar Chapter, in commemoration of the 2024 International Day Of Girls in ICT, organized a workshop aimed at empowering young engineers and collegiates. The event, held under the theme "Leadership: The Digital Female Engineer," was a testament to the commitment of APWEN to advancing the role of women in the field of technology.


In his address, the Dean of the Engineering Faculty at the University of Calabar, Engr. Prof. Asha .A. Odey, represented by Engr. Dr. Edward Adah expressed gratitude to APWEN Calabar Chapter for their unwavering support in nurturing and empowering female engineers in the state. Dr. Adah reiterated the university's full support for APWEN's initiatives and pledged ongoing collaboration.


In her opening remarks, Engr. Faith N. Itam, the Chairman of the Calabar Chapter, expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for the opportunity to celebrate the International Day Of Girls in ICT. She highlighted the significance of the day in emphasizing the importance of girls in ICT and advocating for more women to pursue STEM education.


During her insightful lecture, Engr. Faith N. Itam emphasized the transformative power of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in various aspects of our lives. She stressed the need for more girls and young women to venture into STEM fields, citing the continuous evolution of ICT and its profound impact on society.


Engr. Itam urged female engineers to emulate the resilience and innovation of young girls, positioning themselves at the forefront of digital advancements. She encouraged them to leverage their skills to add value to society and provide solutions to global challenges.


Miss Lizzy Etowa's Testimony: Echoing Engr. Itam's sentiments, Miss Lizzy Etowa one of the collegiates emphasized the networking opportunities afforded by online learning. She emphasized that these platforms not only connect students with peers in their field but also enable interactions with professionals across various industries. Miss Etowa stressed that the connections made on LinkedIn form a valuable network conducive to career advancement.


Reacting to a lecture by Engr. Itam, students expressed enthusiasm for online learning platforms as a means of professional development. 


The highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of participation, engaging question and answer sessions, and insightful contributions from engineers, collegiates, and esteemed guests in attendance. The event served as a platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and inspiration for the next generation of female engineers in Nigeria.
