Senator Eteng Jonah Williams: A Year of Remarkable Achievements

 

On June 13, 2023, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams was sworn in as the representative of Cross River Central Senatorial District in Nigeria's 10th National Assembly. His victory followed intense legal battles, but his legislative journey has since been marked by significant accomplishments.

Senator Williams brought to the Senate 12 years of legislative experience from the Cross River State House of Assembly, where he was the Speaker of the Ninth Assembly. A notable figure in the lobbying efforts that led to Senator Godswill Akpabio's emergence as Senate President, Williams was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) and holds several key committee positions, including Vice Chairman of Senate Services and Co-Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft.

Williams has actively participated in various committee oversights, including visits to Kaztec Engineering Limited and multiple refineries to investigate Turn Around Maintenance projects. He represented the Senate President at numerous events, such as the Independent Petroleum Producers Group workshop and the launch of Chief Edwin Clark's autobiography.

He has introduced three bills in the Senate: the Nuclear Safety Security and Safeguard Bill, the Mineral and Mining Act (Amendment) Bill, and the Chartered Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill. Additionally, he has raised several motions addressing issues from communal clashes in Cross River Central to the need for reforms in vocational education and national counterpart funding policies.

Senator Williams has represented Nigeria at international events, including the Miami International Roadshow for the 2024 licensing bid rounds and the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston. His efforts were recognized with the Policy Maker in Oil and Gas Industry Award at the Nigerian Oil and Gas Forum.

Williams has facilitated numerous empowerment programs, benefiting over 3,000 constituents. These include training in entrepreneurship, domestic violence sensitization, agro-economy skills, and federal grants distribution. He has also secured job placements and appointments for constituents in various federal agencies.

Senator Williams has awarded scholarships to law students and is set to launch a scholarship scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate students. His community interventions include donations to fire victims, grading of roads, and distribution of palliatives. Healthcare initiatives have included a six-day medical outreach benefiting over 10,000 constituents.

Williams is spearheading infrastructure projects such as the construction of solar-powered boreholes and the Light Up Central Project, which will install solar street lights across the senatorial district. He also commissioned a senatorial district constituency office to provide better access to his services.

Looking ahead, Senator Williams plans to implement the 2024 budget, which includes multiple projects aimed at improving roads, schools, hospitals, and providing various forms of training and empowerment.
