Cross River Ministry of Justice Kicks Off Intensive Five-Day Training Program for Lawyers

 



The Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Cross River State, Ededem Ani Esq, opened a five-day specialized training program yesterday the 5th Day of August 2024 at Calabar International Conference Centre (CICC). The training focuses on commercial negotiations, legislative drafting, litigation, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) skills. This initiative in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), aims to enhance the professional capabilities of lawyers in the state.



In his opening remarks, Ani emphasized the importance of continuous capacity-building for lawyers, urging them to take full advantage of the training to improve their efficiency and effectiveness. 


He expressed gratitude to Governor Prince Edet Otu for his support in making the training possible.


During an interview with journalists, Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Peter Bassey, stated the necessity of ongoing legal education for lawyers. 


He noted the ministry's previous lack of exposure to such high-level training and expressed optimism that the collaboration with NIALS would set a new standard for in-house training sessions.


Bassey praised the program's comprehensive coverage of key legal areas and its potential to rejuvenate the ministry's professional standards.



Professor Peter Akper, SAN, OFR, a facilitator from NIALS, stressed the significance of capacity building in enabling lawyers to handle their responsibilities more effectively. He outlined the training's focus on practical case studies and interactive sessions designed to equip participants with the skills needed to address emerging legal challenges.


"For 45 years, the institute has been training law officers across Nigeria and we will continue to do so to address emerging issues that require further training"..Prof. concluded.


Director of Public Prosecution Greg Okim described the training as a much-needed refresher course, essential for keeping legal practitioners updated and proficient. He expressed confidence that the program would significantly enhance the ministry's service delivery and professionalism.


Special Adviser to the Governor, Eni Okoi, and State Counsel Eyimina Edet also underscored the training's value in improving legal drafting processes and staying abreast of new laws.


They emphasized the importance of such programs in ensuring the ministry's legal team remains well-informed and capable of effectively representing the state.


The training, which includes participants from all zonal offices of the ministry which includes; Akamkpa, Ikom Ogoja, and Obudu, aims to foster a culture of continuous professional development and high standards in legal practice across Cross River State.
