3 Years After Passing, Former Nigerian Senate President Wayas Set for Honourable Burial in Cross River State

The long-awaited burial of Nigeria’s former Senate President, Dr. Joseph Wayas, will take place on November 30, 2024, in his hometown of Bassang, Obanliku Local Government Area, Cross River State. Dr. Wayas, a respected leader and prominent figure from Nigeria’s Second Republic, passed away on November 30, 2021, in the United Kingdom while receiving medical treatment. However, due to various complications, his remains could not be returned to Nigeria until July 2024, nearly three years later.

In a press briefing at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre, Calabar, Dr. DornCklaimz Enamhe, Secretary of the Central Planning Committee and Convener of the ‘Who is Who in Northern Cross River Forum,’ confirmed the burial arrangements. He stated, “The remains of the former Senate President of Nigeria, Senator Joseph Wayas, will be laid to rest on November 30, 2024.” The burial will be held with a state ceremony at U.J. Esuene Stadium before Dr. Wayas’s remains are transported to Bassang for final rites.

Dr. Enamhe explained that unavoidable complications had caused significant delays in repatriating Dr. Wayas’s remains from the UK, but these issues have now been resolved. With preparations finalized, he assured the public that all necessary arrangements are in place for a dignified and respectful farewell. Additional details regarding the Service of Songs, Commendation Service, and Final Burial Rites will be announced in the coming week.

“We invite all who admired and respected Dr. Wayas to join us in honoring his life, legacy, and contributions to our country,” Dr. Enamhe stated. “This is a time to reflect on his remarkable journey, celebrate his achievements, and give thanks for the profound impact he made on Nigeria and Cross River State.”

Dr. Enamhe also extended gratitude to the Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, for his unwavering support in ensuring that Dr. Wayas’s legacy is honored appropriately. “His Excellency’s commitment to honoring Rt. Hon. Dr. Joseph Wayas underscores the administration’s respect for our leaders’ contributions, reflecting his dedication to preserving the dignity of our state’s esteemed sons,” he remarked.

The Secretary further acknowledged Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio for his role in the dignified transfer of Dr. Wayas’s remains from Abuja to Calabar and, ultimately, to Obanliku. He noted that Senator Akpabio’s support in coordinating the transportation efforts highlighted the national unity and reverence for Dr. Wayas’s legacy.

In addition to government support, the ‘Who is Who in Northern Cross River Forum’ and the Bassang Nation of Obanliku were commended for their dedication to repatriating Dr. Wayas’s remains when hope seemed dim.

Dr. Joseph Wayas served as the Senate President of Nigeria during the Second Republic, representing the Northern Senatorial District of Cross River State from 1979 to 1983 under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). His legacy as a statesman and leader will be honored on the anniversary of his passing, bringing closure to a life dedicated to public service and the development of Nigeria.
