Award winning Cross River born Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) detective, Dr. David Nkpe has bagged the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Practitioners Association, (NASA) as well as the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria (CAI) fellowships.
Nkpe who won award as the most outstanding EFCC detective with the most successful prosecution in 2023 was conferred the NASA fellowship during its 29th annual conference held on Monday November 11, 2024 at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state. His investiture for the CAI came three days earlier during the 4th Quarter Professional Administrative Conference held at Green Minds Hotel, Abuja.
In a letter conveying his nomination, the President of NASA, Prof. Evelyn Hauwa’u Yusuf said the award was in recognition of his immense contributions to the growth and development of sociology through his years of mentoring young sociologists, research, academic leadership and community service. She noted that “Of particular note is the quality of leadership that you have shown in Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC)”.
Similarly, Dr. Godswil C. Onyekwere, Director/Cheif Learning Officer of the Institute of Corporate Administration said that the governing council of the institute approved his nomination “in recognition and appreciation of your dedication and commitment beyond the call to duty, professionalism in service and visionary approach to administrative matters.”
Speaking exclusively to our reporter, the awards recipient expressed his excitement and appreciation to the two professional bodies for recognizing his modest efforts in the field of Sociology and corporate administration.
According to him, “I consider this a beautiful coincidence because on Saturday, in Abuja, I was conferred with a fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria and today, in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, I was bestowed the highest honour in the field of Anthropology and Sociology in the country.
To be very honest with you, I didn’t know anything about CAI until my nomination. My initial reaction was to reject it because I have rejected so many like that but when I decided to read about them as well as check the calibre of people they had conferred with this honour before, I had no choice than to accept the honour. I want to thank them profusely for the honour.
To my professional body, NASA, I have always told people this story that I decided to study Sociology in University of Jos because of the experience I had when I was a pump attendant in Kaduna. Mr Kingsley Anosike, the Mobil Oil Sale Representative gave me a lift in his official car, a Jeta Executive car one cold harmattan morning. Having enjoyed the warmth of the car heater, I was marveled at that and inquired the course he studied. I was told he read Sociology from the University of Nigeria and therefore I decided that whenever I go to the university, I was going to study Sociology so that I can also get a Jeta with a heater.
It is funny but this was my motivation. I consider myself lucky that I had that experience because I don’t believe that I would have been better studying any other course. I appreciate the leadership of NASA for finding me worthy for this honour. To me, this will be a call to do more for the field and push for its full recognition. I’ll also be motivated by this to improve on those things they saw that made them consider me worthy enough to be conferred a fellow .”
Nkpe was conferred alongside other distinguished Nigerians like the Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Manasseh Daniel Jatau, Cross River State Commissioner of Education, Senator Dr. Stephen Odey, a renowned Demographer, Prof. Martins Obono, amongst others.
