ACCE UNICAL 2025 Conference LOC Pays Courtesy Visit To Varsity VC, Seeks Support

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2025 African Council For Communication Education (ACCE), Conference to be held in the University of Calabar on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit on the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Florence Obi to seek for support of the varsity's administrator.

The  LOC visit was in respect of the upcoming ACCE Conference which the Vice Chancellor had graciously granted consent and approval to host the body  recognised as the oldest and largest communication education organisation in Nigeria which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and remains the umbrella body for all communication related organisations in the country.

While welcoming the LOC, the Vice Chancellor, represented by Prof Peter Okafor, Deputy Vice Chancellor Research, Linkages and Collaborations expressed delight  with the Department of Mass Communication for winning the hosting rights for the 2025 Conference because it would help academics to adjust to global needs of the society.

"We want to welcome the LOC members, the administration of Professor Florence Obi holds Mass Communication as its own brainchild and would do everything possible to make sure that the department strives to move forward". 

According to the Vice Chancellor, the administration is "interested in giving the department  of Mass Communication all that is required to make them stronger".

The VC further  averred  that the university encourages   staff  members to interact with colleagues in other areas and acquire more knowledge especially in conferences which shape researcher's ability to  listen to other's presentation which in turn helps them  to adjust their own approach in order to meet the global needs of the society.

"Giving support to conferences held in our institution is something the administration has been doing and looking forward to doing more as long as the lifespan of this administration stands. 

"ACCE is a great organisation and it seems like an international organisation and celebrated 50th anniversary already and  the Vice Chancellor would gladly take the courtesy call from participants during the conference". 

During the visit, the LOC led by Dr Lawrence Ekwok, Head of Department, Mass Communication formally briefed the university about  details of the conference scheduled to hold from October 21st - 24th 2025. 

The LOC highlighted the requirements for hosting a conference of that magnitude and the necessary support needed from the university to ensure the success of the three-day Communication Conference .

"We came in respect of ACCE UNICAL 2025 conference and the body is in charge of education training in Nigeria. 

"They do not only hold their conferences anywhere except that university gives consent and the Department of Mass Communication contested alongside other universities and we were given the hosting right following approval of the Vice Chancellor."

Dr Ekwok also explained that the department had set up the LOC with different responsibilities such as finance, transport, logistics, media and publicity and other sub committees assigned roles for effective conference organization. He  added that  the university would have a key role to play in terms of providing a smooth sail.

" Apart from supporting the conference, ACCE members would pay a courtesy visit on the Vice Chancellor on arrival. This is to notify the VC about  being at the opening ceremony of the conference to make her remarks as the Chief Host of the programme".

While appreciating the Vice Chancellor for always giving an open arms to the department of Mass Communication, Dr Patrick Ene-Okon, Sub Dean Faculty of Arts in the university expressed optimism at the soothing words from the Vice Chancellor.

In attendance at the meeting were Sub Committee Heads and members of the Local Organising Committee which included Dr Eric Ogri, Dr Steve Nyong, Dr Uchenna Nwanchor, Dr Patrick Edem Okon, Dr Eyamba Mensah, Abu Patience, Lebo Moses and Solomon Ugo.
