Lighting the Way and Quenching Thirst: Senator Williams Brings Hope to Rural Communities

By Inyang Williams

In a bid to deliver impactful governance to his constituents, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams has made remarkable progress in addressing the pressing needs of the people in Cross River Central Senatorial District. His targeted initiatives have significantly improved living conditions, particularly in rural communities where access to basic amenities is often limited.

One of the senator’s standout achievements is the installation of solar-powered boreholes across several communities. This intervention has helped alleviate chronic water scarcity in areas such as Bendeghe-Ekiem, Ediba, Olulumo, Ababene, Ijom, Assiga, Aduma, Afaben, and Boje. Access to clean water is vital for public health and daily life, and these boreholes have become lifelines for many residents.

Equally impactful is the deployment of solar-powered street lights across the six Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the district. This initiative has enhanced nighttime visibility, improved road safety, and reduced crime rates. One resident captured the significance of the project, saying:

“The street lights from Obubra junction to Mile 6 have reduced the number of accidents by road users. I can now ride my farm bike without a headlight to return to Ogada at 1 a.m. I do so without fear.”

Benefiting communities from the solar-powered street lights initiative include:

Obubra LGA

 • Obubra Urban

 • Ofumbungha/Yala

 • Isobo Otaka

 • Isobo Biko-Biko

These solar-powered projects boreholes for clean water and street lights for safety and mobility underscore Senator Eteng Jonah Williams’ commitment to meaningful representation. In a region where 95% of communities are rural and over 70% of the population faces development challenges, such initiatives are not just appreciated they are transformative.

Senator Williams’ work serves as a model for how responsive leadership can directly impact the lives of everyday citizens. His continued efforts are a beacon of hope for more sustainable and inclusive development in Cross River Central.
