Senator Eteng Williams Demands Transparency as Senate Investigates MDA Violations

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has commenced a high-profile investigative hearing into the widespread violations of the Federal Character Principle by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This initiative reflects a renewed legislative effort to promote fairness, equity, and inclusivity in federal appointments and resource distribution.

The hearing, which took place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, was convened by the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs. The session drew participation from top officials of key MDAs, members of the public, and civil society stakeholders.

A Distinguished Member of the Committee, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, expressed concern over the growing disregard for the Federal Character Principle, which is enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution to ensure balanced representation of all regions and ethnic groups in government appointments and public service.

Senator Williams emphasized that the continuous marginalization of certain groups undermines national unity and erodes public trust in government institutions. He urged all MDAs to strictly adhere to the guidelines set out by the Federal Character Commission and to embrace transparency and accountability in all recruitment and promotion exercises.

“This investigation is not a witch-hunt but a necessary step to restore confidence in our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian has an equal opportunity to serve and benefit from the nation’s resources,” Senator Williams stated.

He further warned that any agency found guilty of deliberate violation or manipulation of recruitment processes would be held accountable, with appropriate sanctions recommended.

The Committee is expected to release a comprehensive report at the conclusion of the hearing, which will include recommendations aimed at strengthening compliance mechanisms and enhancing the oversight role of the Federal Character Commission.
