The Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka Williams, has carried out an inspection of the ongoing solar streetlight installations in Ikom Local Government Area, expressing satisfaction with the pace and quality of work done so far.

Speaking during the inspection tour, Prince Williams praised Governor Bassey Otu for his commitment to improving public infrastructure across the state despite financial constraints. He described the solar lighting project as one that will greatly enhance nightlife, boost local businesses, and strengthen security within Ikom and its environs.

According to the Commissioner, the project, which has reached over 80 percent completion, demonstrates the government’s resolve to deliver lasting solutions to power and safety challenges in major communities. He assured residents that the administration remains focused on people-centered development that touches lives directly.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Professor Godwin Akeke, gave further details of the project, explaining that it is being executed by Messrs Fidelity Engineering and Construction Company under the first phase, with 500 solar-powered streetlights designed to illuminate key locations across Ikom. He noted that the lights have a lifespan of up to seven years with minimal maintenance needs.

The contractor, Engineer Prince David Etuk, confirmed that 356 units have already been installed and that the entire project is expected to be completed before the end of the month.

Community leaders and residents who spoke during the inspection expressed appreciation to the state government. Former councillor of Ikom Urban II, Hon. Tasen Odima, noted that the lighting around Ikom Stadium has already improved security and encouraged more evening activities.

A local trader, Miss Lilian Emmanuel, shared her excitement, saying the lights have made business safer and more vibrant at night. Also, Hon. Asinya Ntan, former Vice Chairman of Ikom, emphasized the importance of electricity in deterring crime, pledging that residents will help safeguard the installations.

In the same vein, former Youth Council Chairman, Comrade Kenneth Kajang, lauded Governor Otu for fulfilling his promise to light up Ikom. He urged youths and community leaders to protect the solar equipment from vandalism and theft, recalling past incidents that hindered similar projects.

Areas visited during the inspection included the NDE axis, Obudu Road, Four Corners, and the Ikom Stadium, among others, all now glowing with new solar lights, symbolizing a brighter and safer Ikom under the “People First” administration of Governor Bassey Otu.
