UNICROSS Records Strong Accreditation Performance Across Academic Programmes

Staff and students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) are celebrating a major institutional milestone following the release of accreditation results by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, announced the results on Thursday, April 23, 2026, during an emergency Senate meeting held at the Calabar campus.

She announced that all academic programmes presented for accreditation in November and December 2025 received full accreditation, with the exception of one programme, which was granted Interim Accreditation.

Programmes that secured full accreditation include Human Kinetics and Health Education, Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Peace and Conflict Studies, Sociology, Banking and Finance, Entrepreneurship Studies, Marketing, Forestry and Wildlife, Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Animal and Environmental Biology, Industrial Chemistry, and Plant Science Biology.

The Department of Childhood Education received Interim Accreditation.

Providing further context, the Vice Chancellor noted that prior to the recent exercise, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning had been denied accreditation twice and was consequently unable to admit new students. Similarly, the Department of Forestry and Wildlife had also faced two previous accreditation setbacks.

She emphasized that many of the now fully accredited programmes are relatively new, making the achievement particularly significant.

Professor Bassey also highlighted outstanding departmental performances.

She disclosed that the Department of Plant Science Biology recorded the highest score with 93.7 percent, followed by Animal and Environmental Biology with 92.9 percent, while Entrepreneurship Studies ranked third with 91.2 percent.

She commended the Heads of Departments and staff of all the fully accredited departments for their dedication and hard work, with special recognition given to Dr. Samuel Osim, Head of the Department of Plant Science Biology for exemplary leadership.

In acknowledgment of the achievement of that department, the Vice Chancellor pledged to fully upgrade the department’s laboratory facilities, furnish the Head of Department’s office to the best of the Head of Department's taste and provide a laptop for his personal ownership.

Describing the overall results as a significant institutional accomplishment, Professor Bassey reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement.

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on Public Utilities, Engr.
