CRITICAL LEGISLATIONS IN THE LAWS OF THE FEDERATION REQUIRING AMENDMENTS AND THEIR RELEVANCE TO ABI/YAKURR FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY

The responsibility of a legislator extends beyond sponsoring new bills. It includes reviewing and amending existing laws to ensure they respond to changing economic realities, technological advancements and the developmental aspirations of the people. Several laws in the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria require strategic amendments to unlock growth and improve service delivery, particularly for communities such as Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency.


1. LAND USE ACT, 1978

The Land Use Act requires amendments to simplify land acquisition, digitize land registration, protect communal lands and improve compensation mechanisms.

Relevance to Abi/Yakurr:

Encourages commercial agriculture and agro-industrial investments.

Reduces land disputes and improves access to credit.

Promotes housing and infrastructure development.

Unlocks the economic value of land as the constituency's most important asset.


2. PUBLIC PROCUREMENT ACT, 2007

The Act requires reforms to strengthen transparency, open contracting, project monitoring and local content participation.

Relevance to Abi/Yakurr:

Ensures better execution of constituency projects.

Improves the quality of roads, schools and healthcare facilities.

Reduces project abandonment and waste of public resources.

3. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT, 2007

The Act should be amended to strengthen fiscal discipline, budget transparency and capital project accountability.

6. NATIONAL HEALTH ACT 


The Act requires reforms to expand universal healthcare coverage, strengthen rural healthcare financing and improve healthcare technology.

Strengthens maternal and child healthcare.

Expands health insurance coverage.

Enhances healthcare access for rural communities.


7. EDUCATION LAWS:


Nigeria's education laws require amendments to improve technical education, digital skills, educational financing and research.

Relevance to Abi/Yakurr:

Improves access to quality education.

Strengthens vocational and technical skills acquisition.

Expands ICT and digital literacy.

Supports scholarships and youth empowerment.


8. ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS 


Environmental laws require reforms to strengthen ecological fund management, forest conservation and climate change adaptation.

Relevance to Abi/Yakurr:

Protects farmlands and forest resources.

Mitigates flooding and erosion.

Preserves biodiversity and river systems.

9. NIGERIAN RAILWAY CORPORATION ACT

10. INLAND WATERWAYS ACT

Creates opportunities in commerce and tourism.


11. BORDER COMMUNITIES DEVELOPMENT AGENCY ACT 


The Act requires amendments to expand support for underserved and rural communities and strengthen rural infrastructure financing.

Relevance to Abi/Yakurr:

Accelerates rural development.

Improves access to roads, schools and healthcare facilities.

Promotes equitable distribution of development projects.

Strengthens community participation in governance.


Conclusion

The amendment of existing laws is one of the most powerful instruments available to the National Assembly for driving national and local development. For Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, reforms in land administration, agriculture, procurement, fiscal management, healthcare, education, mining, transportation and environmental management can unlock immense opportunities for growth and prosperity.


A legislator who champions these reforms is not merely changing statutes; he is creating pathways for economic transformation, strengthening institutions and laying the foundation for a more prosperous and sustainable Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency.

BREAKING NEWS: Youths of Ikot Ansa Nab Vandals Destroying Public Utilities, Hand Over to Authorities for Prosecution

  In a combined effort to curb the rampant vandalism of public utilities in Cross River State, the youth leader of Ikot Ansa, Prince, Victor Otu Iso JR, alongside his community, successfully apprehended criminals involved in the destruction of vital public infrastructure. The vandals were caught red-handed this morning, 13th day of September 2024, as they attempted to steal Amor cables belonging to state transformers at Ekpo Iso.
