The Cross River State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to addressing flooding in Calabar through improved drainage infrastructure and strengthened environmental sanitation measures.
The assurance came during an on-the-spot assessment of flood-affected communities following recent heavy rainfall. Accompanied by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Mr. Nsa Gill, and the Special Adviser on Community Relations, the commissioner inspected Ibesikpo Street, Mayne Avenue by Atakpa Street, Atakpa Street, Atu by Webber Street, Hart Street and Jebs Street.
Speaking with residents during the inspection, Hon. Edet identified the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into gutters and drainage channels as a major cause of the recurring floods across the city. He explained that blocked drains hinder the free flow of stormwater, resulting in widespread flooding during heavy rainfall.
He urged residents to support government efforts by maintaining clean surroundings and avoiding the dumping of waste into drainage systems, stressing that the protection and maintenance of public infrastructure is a shared responsibility.
The commissioner also noted that many of Calabar's drainage channels were constructed several decades ago and are no longer capable of handling the increasing volume of runoff caused by urban development and changing weather patterns.
To tackle the challenge, he disclosed that the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has developed a modern drainage design that will be implemented in strategic locations to improve water discharge and reduce flooding in vulnerable communities.
Hon. Edet further described the drainage corridor around the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) as a major concern. He revealed that a recent assessment by the ministry showed that about 1.5 kilometres of the channel had been severely obstructed by debris, refuse and other materials washed in through adjoining runoff channels.
He emphasized that restoring blocked drainage networks and encouraging responsible environmental practices among residents are critical to achieving a lasting solution to the persistent flooding challenges in the state capital.
Residents of the affected communities commended the swift response of the Cross River State Government and expressed optimism that the planned interventions would provide long-term relief from flooding while protecting lives and property.
