The Commissioner representing Cross River State at the Niger Delta Development Commission, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to women, describing them as the foundation of life and societal strength.
Duke who stated this on Thursday in Calabar while declaring open the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration organized by the Cross River State office of NDDC said the need to support Women rights cannot be overemphasized.
Duke who was represented by his Special Assistant Administration Barr. Ita Bassey Duke hinted that the commission cherishes women while referring to them as the foundations of life.
“For us in NDDC, we usually take a day out once in a year to celebrate women. We want to say that at different times, whenever women are given the opportunity they show that they are laced with strength and character.”
"Citing example with women like Emmanuela Teguhu, Okonjo Iweala, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Dame Patience Jonathan and our own Margaret Ekpo who have remained a source of strength and support as well as left indelible marks"" he added.
Speaking on global advocacy for gender equality, Duke condemned some cultural practices that undermine the worth and status of women.
“Now, we know all over the world, we are talking about gender equality, we are talking about women’s rights. It is time to also show our support to them by lending our voice to harmful cultural practices against women rights, advocate for their rights and celebrate them adequately,” he said.
Representing the MD/CEO of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Assistant Director of Youths, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Esther Philip, said the Commission used the Directorate of Youth, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs to celebrate “the extraordinary contributions, resilience, strength and leadership of women across the Niger Delta in Cross River State.
This year’s theme, Rights, Justice, Action for Women and Girl she noted, calls for a move beyond ourselves and a step to dismantle barriers, promote equal rights, and ensure justice for every woman.
“It is also a powerful reminder that gender equality is not optional. Our MD, CEO and the entire board of NDDC remain deeply committed to this cause. As such, the Commission continues to champion programs that empower women, amplify their voices, and instigate them to lead into leadership and decision-making for the development of the Niger Delta region,” Dr. Philip said.
One of the keynote speakers and Head of Accounts and Administration at the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA), Dr. Tamunonye Harry, charged women to formalize and grow their businesses for sustainability.
He said, for any business to grow, one must increase revenue and productivity while urging women to promote innovation.
“Businesses start off with ideas. We are a regional category, but we have a registered business category. First and foremost, for you to be a member of the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce and be a regular professional performer, you have to register your business. This will cost you nothing less than 17,000".
"Business growth and sustainability are closely connected for startups, focus on increasing customer revenue and market value while sustainability ensures the business can continue operating successfully.”
The event, held in Calabar, drew participants from across the state and featured discussions and empowerment activities aimed at advancing women and girls in the Niger Delta while certificates were presented to participants.
