The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s legal and regulatory framework to safeguard critical petroleum infrastructure, combat crude oil theft, and enhance investment in the nation’s upstream oil and gas sector.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) Governing Board Strategic Retreat held in Isimi, Epe, Lagos State, Senator Williams commended the Commission for convening key stakeholders to deliberate on the future of Nigeria’s upstream petroleum industry and the effective implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The Senator noted that the Senate Committee remains committed to providing effective legislative oversight and supporting policies that will deepen investment, increase crude oil production, promote transparency, and ensure the sustainable development of Nigeria’s petroleum resources.
He disclosed that the Senate is currently reviewing the Miscellaneous Offences Act and the Petroleum Production and Distribution (Anti-Sabotage) Act as part of efforts to establish a stronger legal framework for the protection of critical oil and gas infrastructure. According to him, the proposed legislative reforms are aimed at improving the prosecution of offenders while providing greater legal protection for security personnel and public officials responsible for safeguarding the nation’s strategic assets.
Senator Williams emphasized that achieving these objectives would require close collaboration with the NUPRC, stressing that the Committee looks forward to leveraging the Commission’s technical expertise and policy insights in developing legislation capable of addressing emerging challenges such as crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, sabotage, and other threats to the industry.
He expressed confidence that the retreat would generate practical recommendations to strengthen regulatory governance, improve industry performance, and advance Nigeria’s goal of building a more secure, competitive, and resilient upstream petroleum sector.
The NUPRC Governing Board Strategic Retreat brought together industry leaders, regulators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to review strategic priorities and enhance collaboration in driving sustainable growth within Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas industry.
