TEXT: An Expository Sermon from 2 Corinthians 4:7-12 KJV

“7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you.”

CENTRAL TRUTH

The Christian life is not a life without pressure. It is a life in which the power of Christ enables us to pass through pressure without being defeated by it.

There are pressures that can surround you, but they cannot overcome you.

There are battles that can shake you, but they cannot destroy you.

There are seasons that can knock you down, but they cannot finish you.

Why?

Because the treasure inside the vessel is greater than the pressure outside the vessel.

1 John 4:4 

“...because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

1 John 5:4

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:...”

INTRODUCTION

Why Did Paul Write 2 Corinthians 4?

To understand 2 Corinthians 4, we need to understand something about Paul's relationship with the Corinthian church.

Paul founded the church at Corinth during his second missionary journey. Corinth was a wealthy, influential and morally challenging city. The church itself was spiritually gifted, but it had many problems.

There were divisions.

There were moral failures.

There were questions about spiritual gifts.

There were disputes about leadership.

There were people questioning Paul's authority and apostleship.

Paul had written 1 Corinthians to correct many of these problems. But after that letter, the relationship between Paul and some of the Corinthians became painful.

Paul experienced opposition from people who questioned his ministry, his authority, his appearance, his preaching and even his motives.

Some false teachers were presenting themselves as superior ministers.

They apparently measured ministry according to outward appearance, eloquence, credentials and human achievement.

Paul responds by showing something very different.

He says, in effect:

True Christian ministry is not demonstrated by having a trouble-free life.

True ministry is demonstrated by the power of God working through a surrendered and sometimes suffering vessel.

That is why 2 Corinthians contains so much teaching about:

suffering,

weakness,

endurance,

persecution,

God's grace,

spiritual ministry,

and the power of Christ.

By chapter 4, Paul is explaining how he continues to minister despite enormous pressures.

Notice what he says in verse 1:

“Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not.”

There is the key:

“We faint not.”

He had pressure, but he did not quit.

He had opposition, but he did not abandon his calling.

He had suffering, but he did not surrender his faith.

And then he explains why.

“We have this treasure in earthen vessels...” verse.7

1. THE FOUR NEGATIVES AND THE FOUR POSITIVES

2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Paul gives us four pictures of pressure and four corresponding pictures of victory.

1. PRESSURED, BUT NOT CRUSHED

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed.”

Paul says:

“We are troubled.”

The Greek word is thlibō, meaning to press, squeeze, or put under pressure.

Paul experienced pressure from different directions.

There was pressure from enemies.

Pressure from false teachers.

Pressure from difficult circumstances.

Pressure from ministry.

Pressure from physical suffering.

Pressure from the needs of the churches.

He was being pressed.

But he says:

“Yet not distressed.”

The idea is that he was not completely trapped or crushed by the pressure.

Here is the simple lesson:

Pressure is not the same as defeat.

You can be under pressure without being overcome by pressure.

Think about a sponge.

When you squeeze a sponge, something comes out of it.

Likewise, when life squeezes a Christian, what is inside begins to come out.

If Christ is living in you, pressure can reveal Christ in you.

So don't always pray only:

“Lord, remove the pressure.”

Sometimes ask:

“Lord, reveal Your life through me in this pressure.”

2. CONFUSED, BUT NOT HOPELESS

“We are perplexed, but not in despair.”

Paul was perplexed.

The Greek word aporeō describes being uncertain, not knowing which way to turn.

There were things Paul did not understand.

There are moments in the Christian life when you also say:

“Lord, I don't understand what is happening.”

You prayed.

You believed.

You waited.

Yet the answer has not appeared.

That is perplexity.

But Paul says:

“Not in despair.”

In other words:

“I don't understand, but I have not lost hope.”

There is a difference between saying:

“I don't know what God is doing.”

and saying:

“God is doing nothing.”

There is a difference between:

“I don't see a way.”

and:

“There is no way.”

Faith does not mean you understand everything.

Faith means you trust God when you do not understand everything.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

2 Corinthians 5:7, KJV

Simple declaration:

I may not understand the situation, but I will not lose my hope in God.

3. OPPOSED, BUT NOT ABANDONED

“Persecuted, but not forsaken.”

The Greek word diōkō means to pursue, chase or persecute.

Paul was not merely experiencing inconvenience.

He was opposed because of his commitment to Christ.

Yet he says:

“Not forsaken.”

This is beautiful.

People can reject you.

People can misunderstand you.

People can criticize you.

People can abandon you.

But God will never abandon you.

“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Hebrews 13:5, KJV

Notice Paul did not say:

“I was never persecuted.”

He said:

“I was persecuted, but I was not forsaken.”

God did not always remove the opposition.

He sustained Paul in the middle of the opposition.

Sometimes we pray:

“Lord, get me out of this.”

And God says:

“I will be with you while you go through it.”

Isaiah 43:2 says:

“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee.”

The promise is not that there will never be waters.

The promise is:

“I will be with thee.”

4. KNOCKED DOWN, BUT NOT FINISHED

“Cast down, but not destroyed.”

The Greek word kataballō means to throw down or knock down.

Paul experienced moments when life hit him hard.

And sometimes life hits us hard too.

You can be knocked down by:

disappointment,

failure,

betrayal,

financial difficulties,

rejection,

unanswered prayer,

opposition,

Death of a loved one 

unexpected circumstances.

But Paul says:

“Cast down, but not destroyed.”

Being knocked down is not the same as being finished.

“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.”

Proverbs 24:16, KJV

You may fall.

Get up again.

You may be wounded.

Get up again.

You may experience disappointment.

Get up again.

The enemy may knock you down.

But he cannot determine your final destination.

Remember this:

A setback is not the end of your story.

THE FOURFOLD DECLARATION

So Paul gives us four simple statements:

I am PRESSURED, but I am not CRUSHED.

I am CONFUSED, but I am not HOPELESS.

I am OPPOSED, but I am not ABANDONED.

I am KNOCKED DOWN, but I am not FINISHED.

That is Christian resilience.

2. WHY SHOULD THE PRESSURES OF LIFE NOT DEFEAT THE CHRISTIAN?

2 Corinthians 4:7

Now we come to the secret behind Paul's endurance.

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels...”

Paul gives us a picture of a clay pot containing treasure.

An earthen vessel is ordinary.

It is fragile.

It is breakable.

It is not impressive.

Paul is saying:

“We are the vessels.”

But something extraordinary has been placed inside us.

What is the treasure?

The treasure is the gospel and the life-giving power of God revealed in Christ.

Paul says:

“That the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

This is the secret.

The vessel is weak.

The treasure is powerful.

The vessel is fragile.

The treasure is eternal.

The vessel can be pressured.

The treasure cannot be defeated.

That is why Paul does not boast about himself.

He says the power belongs to God.

Think about a light bulb

A light bulb is fragile.

You can break it easily.

But when electricity flows through it, it produces light.

The bulb does not generate the electricity.

It simply carries it.

In the same way, God has placed His treasure in human vessels.

You may feel weak.

You may feel inadequate.

You may say:

“I cannot handle this.”

And perhaps, in yourself, you cannot.

But the Christian life was never designed to be lived by your strength alone.

Paul says:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13, KJV

The strength is Christ's.

The glory belongs to God.

3. WHY DOES GOD ALLOW HIS PEOPLE TO PASS THROUGH PRESSURES?

2 Corinthians 4:10-12

This is where we come to one of the deepest truths in the passage.

Paul says:

“Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”

Notice those words:

“That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest.”

This gives us one reason God allows His people to experience pressure.

God can use pressure as a platform for the manifestation of Christ's life.

The pressure does not necessarily mean God has abandoned you.

Sometimes the pressure becomes the environment in which Christ's life becomes visible through you.

A. PRESSURE CAN REVEAL CHRIST'S LIFE IN YOU

Anybody can appear peaceful when everything is peaceful.

But when everybody around you is angry and you remain gentle, people see Christ.

When circumstances are frightening but you remain faithful, people see Christ.

When you are treated unfairly but you forgive, people see Christ.

When you are under pressure but continue serving God, people see Christ.

When you are disappointed but continue trusting God, people see Christ.

The pressure becomes a stage.

And Christ becomes visible.

B. GOD USES PRESSURE TO REDUCE SELF-DEPENDENCE

Verse 7 says:

“That the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

Sometimes we don't discover how dependent we are on God until our own strength is insufficient.

Pressure exposes our limitations.

Pressure teaches us:

“I cannot do this without God.”

And that realization is not weakness.

It is the doorway to deeper dependence.

Paul later says:

“For when I am weak, then am I strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:10, KJV

Why?

Because when human strength ends, we learn to depend upon divine strength.

C. GOD USES PRESSURE TO FORM CHRIST IN US

God is not merely interested in bringing us out of difficult situations.

He is also interested in bringing something out of us through difficult situations.

Patience must be developed.

Faith must mature.

Character must deepen.

Humility must increase.

Love must become stronger.

Endurance must be developed.

Romans 5:3-4 says:

“Tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience;

And experience, hope.”

Notice:

Tribulation → Patience → Experience → Hope.

God can use what was meant to break you to build something in you.

D. GOD USES OUR PRESSURES TO MINISTER LIFE TO OTHERS

Paul says in verse 12:

“So then death worketh in us, but life in you.”

Paul's suffering was producing spiritual benefit for other people.

His endurance strengthened others.

His faith encouraged others.

His suffering gave credibility to his message.

His willingness to continue became a testimony.

Sometimes people will learn more about God's 

faithfulness by watching you go through difficulty than by watching you live without difficulty.

Your testimony may become somebody else's encouragement.

Your endurance may become somebody else's strength.

Your survival may become somebody else's reason to keep believing.

4. WHAT SHOULD THE CHRISTIAN DO WHEN PRESSED ON EVERY SIDE?

This brings us to the practical response.

When pressure comes, what should we do?

Should we cry?

Should we complain?

Should we continually ask:

“God, why me?”

Should our entire prayer life become:

“Lord, remove this pressure!”

There is nothing wrong with asking God for deliverance.

David often did.

Jesus Himself prayed in Gethsemane.

Paul prayed concerning his thorn.

But there is a higher level of prayer than merely asking:

“Lord, get me out.”

We can also pray:

“Lord, reveal Yourself through me while I am in it.”

RESPONSE 1: DON'T WASTE YOUR PRESSURE

When pressure comes, don't waste it by only complaining about it.

Ask:

“Lord, what are You producing in me through this?”

Instead of only:

“Why me?”

Ask:

“What do You want to reveal through me?”

Instead of:

“When will this end?”

Ask:

“How can I glorify You while I am here?”

Instead of:

“Why is this happening?”

Ask:

“Lord, how can the life of Jesus be manifested through my response?”

That is a powerful change of perspective.

RESPONSE 2: LOOK INWARD BEFORE LOOKING OUTWARD

Paul says:

“We have this treasure in earthen vessels.”

When pressure comes, don't only look at what is happening around you.

Remember what is happening within you.

Christ is in you.

The Holy Spirit is in you.

The Word of God is in you.

The grace of God is available to you.

The power of God is working in you.

Your circumstances may be saying:

“You cannot survive.”

But the treasure inside you says:

“God is with you.”

RESPONSE 3: DON'T INTERPRET GOD BY YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

One of the greatest mistakes Christians make under pressure is judging God's faithfulness by their circumstances.

Bad circumstances do not mean a bad God.

Paul was persecuted, but God was faithful.

Joseph was imprisoned, but God was faithful.

David was hunted, but God was faithful.

Daniel was thrown into a den of lions, but God was faithful.

The three Hebrew children were thrown into the fire, but God was faithful.

Jesus went to the cross, but God was faithful.

Never allow a difficult chapter to make you doubt the Author.

RESPONSE 4: KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ETERNAL

2 Corinthians 4 does not end with suffering.

Paul eventually says:

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” 2 Corinthians 4:17, KJV

Paul does not deny the affliction.

He changes its perspective.

It is:

Light compared with glory.

Temporary compared with eternity.

Momentary compared with what God is producing.

Then verse 18 says:

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen...”

This is how you survive pressure.

Don't let what you see become bigger than what you believe.

RESPONSE 5: LET CHRIST BE SEEN THROUGH YOUR RESPONSE

When pressure comes, ask:

“What would Jesus look like through me in this situation?”

If someone insults you:

Let Christ's patience be seen.

If someone hurts you:

Let Christ's forgiveness be seen.

If you are disappointed:

Let Christ's faith be seen.

If you are under financial pressure:

Let Christ's trust be seen.

If you are persecuted:

Let Christ's endurance be seen.

If you are knocked down:

Let Christ's resurrection life be seen when you rise again.

That is the message of verse 10:

“That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”

CONCLUSION: PRESSED, BUT NOT DEFEATED

Paul does not promise:

“You will never be troubled.”

He says:

“Troubled, but not distressed.”

He does not promise:

“You will always understand.”

He says:

“Perplexed, but not in despair.”

He does not promise:

“Everyone will accept you.”

He says:

“Persecuted, but not forsaken.”

He does not promise:

“You will never fall.”

He says:

“Cast down, but not destroyed.”

Why?

Because:

“We have this treasure in earthen vessels.”

There is something inside you that your circumstances cannot destroy.

There is grace inside you.

There is faith inside you.

There is the Word inside you.

There is the Holy Spirit inside you.

There is the life of Christ inside you.

So when pressure comes from every side, don't conclude:

“I am finished.”

Say:

“I am pressed, but I am not crushed.”

When you don't understand:

“I am confused, but I am not hopeless.”

When people oppose you:

“I am opposed, but I am not abandoned.”

When you fall:

“I am knocked down, but I am not finished.”

And when the pressure becomes intense, don't ask only:

“Lord, why me?”

Ask:

“Lord, how can the life of Jesus be manifested through me in this situation?”

Because sometimes God does not immediately change the situation.

He changes what the situation produces in you.

Sometimes He does not remove the fire.

He reveals Himself in the fire.

Sometimes He does not stop the storm.

He teaches you that He is Lord in the storm.

Sometimes He does not prevent you from being knocked down.

He gives you grace to rise again.

So, child of God:

You may be pressed on every side, but you are not defeated.

The pressure is real.

But so is God's power.

The battle is real.

But so is God's grace.

The weakness is real.

But so is Christ's strength.

The vessel is earthen.

But the treasure is divine.

And the same God who sustained Paul is able to sustain you.

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”

Pressed, but not crushed.

Confused, but not hopeless.

Opposed, but not abandoned.

Knocked down, but not finished.

I am pressed on every side, but I am not defeated!

CONGREGATIONAL DECLARATION

You can close the sermon by having the congregation repeat these slowly:

I am a vessel, but I carry a treasure.

I may be weak, but God's power is working in me.

I may be pressed, but I am not crushed.

I may be confused, but I am not hopeless.

I may be opposed, but I am not abandoned.

I may be knocked down, but I am not finished.

I will not allow pressure to destroy my faith.

I will not allow difficulty to make me doubt God's goodness.

I will not waste my suffering.

I will allow Christ to be revealed through my response.

The life of Jesus will be manifested through me.

I am pressed on every side, but I am not defeated!

30 EFFECTUAL AND FERVENT PRAYER POINTS

Pressed on Every Side, But Not Defeated

These prayers are built around the four pressures Paul identifies and the four victories God gives the believer.

I. PRAYERS AGAINST PRESSURE AND DISTRESS

1. Prayer for divine strength

Father, in the name of Jesus, strengthen me with might by Your Spirit in my inner man. Let Your strength become greater than every pressure confronting my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Ephesians 3:16

2. Prayer against crushing pressure

Father, every pressure that has become too heavy for me, I place it into Your hands. Let Your grace sustain me, and let no pressure crush my faith, peace, joy, or confidence in You. In Jesus' name.

3. Prayer for peace under pressure

Lord Jesus, when everything around me is shaking, establish Your peace within me. Let me not react to pressure according to fear, but according to faith. In Jesus' name.

Philippians 4:6-7

4. Prayer against anxiety

Father, I cast every care, worry, fear, and anxiety upon You. I refuse to allow the pressures of life to dominate my mind. Guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:7; Philippians 4:7

5. Prayer for grace to endure

Lord, give me grace to remain standing when the pressure becomes intense. Let me endure without complaining, compromise, or abandoning my faith.

6. Declaration against defeat

I declare in the name of Jesus: I may be troubled, but I will not be distressed. I may be pressed, but I will not be crushed. The pressure around me will not overcome the Christ within me!

II. PRAYERS AGAINST PERPLEXITY AND DESPAIR

7. Prayer for divine wisdom

Father, whenever I do not know what to do, give me wisdom from above. Illuminate my understanding and show me the way I should go.

James 1:5; Psalm 32:8

8. Prayer against confusion

In the name of Jesus, every confusion clouding my mind, clear away. Let the peace of Christ rule in my heart, and let divine wisdom guide my decisions.

9. Prayer for hope

Father, when I cannot see the answer, help me to see You. When I cannot understand the process, help me trust Your purpose. Let hope arise within me again.

10. Prayer against hopelessness

Every voice telling me that my situation is hopeless, I reject it in the name of Jesus. My God is still working. My future is still in His hands. My testimony is not over!

11. Prayer for faith during uncertainty

Lord, teach me to walk by faith and not by sight. When circumstances contradict Your promises, let Your Word remain the foundation of my confidence.

2 Corinthians 5:7

12. Declaration of hope

I declare: I may be perplexed, but I am not in despair. I may not understand what God is doing, but I trust the God who is working. I will not lose hope!

III. PRAYERS AGAINST PERSECUTION AND ABANDONMENT

13. Prayer for divine presence

Father, let me become increasingly conscious of Your presence. In seasons when I feel alone, remind me that You are with me and that You will never leave nor forsake me.

Hebrews 13:5

14. Prayer against rejection

Lord, heal every wound caused by rejection, betrayal, misunderstanding, or abandonment. Let Your acceptance become greater than the pain caused by people.

15. Prayer for courage under opposition

Father, give me courage when I am opposed. Keep me from becoming bitter, fearful, or discouraged. Help me remain faithful to You regardless of human opposition.

16. Prayer for grace to forgive

Lord, give me grace to forgive those who have hurt or opposed me. Deliver my heart from bitterness, resentment, revenge, and hatred. Let the character of Christ be formed in me.

Ephesians 4:31-32

17. Prayer for protection

Father, preserve me from every evil intention directed against my life, family, calling, and destiny. Let Your presence surround me and keep me according to Your will.

18. Declaration of divine companionship

I declare: I may be persecuted, but I am not forsaken. People may reject me, but God has not rejected me. I am never alone because the Lord is with me!

IV. PRAYERS AGAINST BEING CAST DOWN

19. Prayer to rise again

Father, wherever life has knocked me down, give me grace to rise again. Restore my strength, courage, vision, and determination.

Proverbs 24:16

20. Prayer against discouragement

Every spirit of discouragement attacking my heart, lose your hold over me in the name of Jesus. Let the joy of the Lord become my strength.

Nehemiah 8:10

21. Prayer for restoration

Father, restore what disappointment, failure, loss, or difficult circumstances have taken from me according to Your will. Turn my season of mourning into a testimony of Your faithfulness.

22. Prayer against premature surrender

Lord, deliver me from giving up too soon. When the answer seems delayed, help me continue believing, praying, serving, and obeying You.

Galatians 6:9

23. Prayer for renewed strength

Father, renew my strength like the eagle. Let me run without becoming weary and walk without fainting.

Isaiah 40:31

24. Declaration of resurrection strength

I declare: I may be cast down, but I am not destroyed. I may fall, but by the grace of God I will rise again. My setback will not become my final destination!

V. PRAYERS FOR CHRIST TO BE MANIFESTED THROUGH US

25. Prayer for Christ's life to be revealed

Father, let the life of Jesus be manifested through my mortal body. Let people see Christ in my words, attitudes, decisions, reactions, relationships, and conduct.

2 Corinthians 4:10

26. Prayer for Christ to be revealed through pressure

Lord, when I am under pressure, don't allow my flesh to be the first thing people see. Let them see the patience, love, humility, faith, peace, and strength of Jesus operating through me.

27. Prayer for death to self

Father, let everything in me that resists Your will be brought under the government of Your Spirit. Let self decrease and let Christ increase in me.

Galatians 2:20; John 3:30

28. Prayer for divine power in human weakness

Father, I acknowledge that I am an earthen vessel. I cannot sustain myself by human strength. Let the excellency of Your power be manifested through my weakness, so that You alone receive the glory.

2 Corinthians 4:7

29. Prayer that my pressure will bless others

Lord, use my testimony, endurance, and experience to strengthen other people. Let what I have survived become a source of hope for somebody else. Let life work in others through what You are doing in me.

2 Corinthians 4:12

30. Prayer of complete surrender

Father, I surrender my pressures, questions, disappointments, fears, weaknesses, and future to You. I will not merely ask, “Lord, why me?” I ask, “Lord, what do You want to manifest through me?” Let the life of Jesus be seen in me. Let Your grace sustain me, Your power strengthen me, Your presence preserve me, and Your purpose be fulfilled in me. I declare that I am pressed on every side, but I am not defeated. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen!

I will stand again.

I will believe again.

I will praise again.

I will fulfil God's purpose for my life.
