The staff personnel verification and audit exercise of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has been successfully concluded at the Calabar Campus, following a six-day exercise that included the verification of academic and non-teaching staff, a mop-up exercise for staff who could not participate earlier, and the verification of University projects.
The exercise, conducted by the Technical Committee on the Review of the Working Environment in UNICROSS, commenced on Monday, August 3, 2026, with the verification of academic staff and continued on Tuesday with further verification activities.
On Tuesday, August 4, the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, alongside members of the University Management, visited the venue of the exercise, where they participated in the audit and verification process along with staff of their respective departments.
During the visit, members of the Technical Committee jokingly asked that the Vice Chancellor should be identified. Staff present at the venue responded enthusiastically, screaming and joyfully identifying her as the Vice Chancellor.
Prof. Bassey warmly interacted with members of staff and commended them for their cooperation, punctuality and orderly conduct.
She noted that the positive disposition of staff had contributed significantly to the hitch-free progress of the exercise.
On Wednesday, August 5, the verification exercise proceeded to non-teaching staff. The Vice Chancellor again visited the venue, where she interacted with members of staff and monitored the ongoing verification process.
The Chairman of the Technical Committee, Bishop (Prof.) U. U. Effiong, welcomed the Vice Chancellor and members of the University Management during their visits and expressed appreciation to staff for their peaceful disposition, cooperation and compliance with the requirements of the exercise.
The verification of non-teaching staff continued on Thursday, August 6, with staff demonstrating commendable cooperation, punctuality and orderly participation throughout the process. Their positive disposition contributed significantly to the smooth and seamless conduct of the exercise.
On Friday, August 7, the exercise continued with verification of staff who could not participate on previous days and entered another important phase with the verification of University projects across the Calabar Campus. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, led members of the Technical Committee to various project sites, where they inspected ongoing and completed projects as part of the broader review of the University's working environment and infrastructure.
Following the project verification exercise, the Vice Chancellor commended members of the Technical Committee for their commitment, dedication and diligence in carrying out the assignment. She acknowledged the time and effort invested by the Committee in ensuring a thorough and credible verification and audit exercise in Calabar campus.
The exercise was subsequently extended to Saturday, August 8, to further accommodate staff who were unable to participate on the earlier scheduled days. The mop-up exercise provided an opportunity for eligible staff members who had genuine reasons for missing the initial sessions to complete the verification process.
The Technical Committee on the Review of the Working Environment in UNICROSS was constituted by the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, as part of his administration's commitment to repositioning the University for greater efficiency, accountability and sustainable growth.
According to a release jointly signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Bishop (Prof.) U. U. Effiong, and the Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Glory Tony Effiong, all members of staff were required to present themselves for the exercise with all relevant documents. The Committee had also warned that failure to participate in the verification could result in affected staff members being recommended for suspension from the payroll pending successful verification.
The recommendations of the Committee at the conclusion of the exercise are expected to provide valuable guidance to the State Government and the University Management in implementing further reforms aimed at strengthening UNICROSS and improving service delivery.
With the successful completion of the Calabar Campus phase, the exercise will proceed to the Ogoja Campus on Monday, August 10, where both academic and non-academic staff will undergo verification. Staff of the Okuku Campus will be verified on Tuesday, August 11, while a final mop-up exercise and projects verification for both campuses will take place on Wednesday, August 12.
The University remains optimistic that the outcome of the audit will contribute meaningfully to the ongoing repositioning of UNICROSS for greater efficiency, accountability, excellence and improved service delivery.
