  Following the tragic auto crash involving students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) on May 1, 2026, a delegation of the University’s Alumni Association on Sunday Amy 3rd paid a solidarity visit to victims receiving treatment at different hospitals in Calabar . The delegation, comprising the Member representing Convocation in the Governing Council, Dr. Ofut Ofar ; National Legal Adviser, Barr. Romeo Ojong ; Treasurer, Engr. Peter Ikem ; Public Relations Officer, Dr. Mrs. Peace Egbai ; and Alumni Relations Officer, Engr. Joel Agbaragba , announced a donation of Five Hundred Thousand Naira ( N500,000 ) on behalf of the Association to support the medical expenses of the hospitalized students. During the visit, the delegation encouraged the students to remain strong and assured them that they are not alone in this difficult moment. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk , described the incident as “unfortunate and overblown” during an on-the-spot assessment, confirming that infrastructure including an ambulance, electrical installations, doors, windows and ward equipment were damaged. “We are assessing the extent of the damage. The ambulance screens have been broken, and parts of the hospital have been destroyed. We will also evaluate the impact on the wards,” he said. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk , disclosed that the lone case was confirmed on April 16, 2026, by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) isolation centre. According to him, the State Government swiftly activated its public health emergency response mechanisms, including the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), to contain the situation and prevent further spread.   The Management, staff, students and the entire University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) community have received with profound sadness the news of a tragic road accident involving twenty-four (24) students and one (1) staff member of the University. The students, mostly members of the executive body of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), were returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when the unfortunate incident occurred at Odukpani Local Government Area.
