WBDD: UCTH sues for more voluntary blood donations

 



In line with the World Health Organization (WHO), the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion have yesterday marked World Blood Donor Day with the theme: “Celebrating the Gift of Blood - _Give Blood and keep the World beating”._


Speaking in an interview, a Consultant Haematologist, Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Dr Bassey Bassey said, “Today June 14, first celebrated in 2005, as a day to raise awareness for Blood Donation, was set aside by the World Health Organization to appreciate regular voluntary or unpaid blood donors.


“We want to end commercial donation and reduce family replacement blood donation which are in high occurrences in Africa; voluntary or unpaid donation is the safest mode of getting blood for all patients who need blood, he said.


Continuing, Dr. Bassey said, “we encourage voluntary blood donations for people who suffer from chronic conditions like: cancer and sickle cell disease, accident victims, or women undergoing caesarean section.”


“They are four major blood groups that can be identified in humans; blood groups A, B, AB, O and are further divided into two, Positive (+) and Negative (-), having a total of eight different blood types in humans. They is need to have persons with different blood types coming routinely to donate blood and one person can donate three to four times in a year which will go a long way in saving lives.”


Highlighting the benefits of blood donation, the Haematologist said: “you will have the opportunity to run a mini medical check up of yourself; your blood level, blood pressure, weight, screen for infections and it helps to reduce incidence of cancer, removes excess iron from the system, burn calories, gives personal feeling of joy that you have saved a live, amongst others.” 


He encouraged other associations, groups and individuals to visit the UCTH Donor Clinic at anytime for blood donation which will be kept at the blood bank for appropriate use while thanking members of Christ Embassy Church, Satellite Town, Calabar who came out in their numbers to participate in  the event.


The Consultant also took out time to appreciate the Chief Medical Director, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State, Prof Ikpeme A. Ikpeme for the encouragement and support, the acting Head of Department, Prof. Iquo Ibanga, members of the UCTH Voluntary Donor Task Forces, the Nurses and other Scientists.

Engr. Jerome Egbe Visits NSCDC Command for Strategic Partnership on Public Utilities

  The Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on Public Utilities, Engr. Dr. Jerome Egbe, KSM, today, October 8, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Cross River Command, Mr. Brown Charles, in Calabar.  The visit centered on establishing a strategic partnership to protect and secure public utilities across the state from vandals and criminal elements. UNICROSS ACTING VC EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER DAMAGE OF UNIVERSITY STUCTURES AFTER RAINSTORM IN CALABAR
