Nigeria At 61: C'River Assembly Speaker Says Nigeria Has Reached A Milestone, Sues for Peaceful Coexistence

As Nigeria celebrates her 61st Independence Anniversary today, October 1, the Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams has sued for unity and peaceful coexistence among ethnic nationalities in the country.

The Speaker, who made the call recently in Calabar, also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Ben Ayade, and Nigerians as a whole for attaining the milestone, despite the challenges the country has gone through.

“At 61, I wish every Nigerian well. Let us keep Nigeria united and peaceful. We have gone through a lot. We have gone through so many challenges. Every great nation goes through that. Let us have hope, especially for us Cross Riverians. Let us think of Cross River, let us think about the Nigerian project. We must leave in peace with one another.

“For those that are giving us cause to cry, I say please let us unite and work with the government to achieve a better Nigeria. Our founding fathers have done well. This is the time for us to create our legacies so that our children will celebrate us,” he said.

Eteng posited that the relationship among different groups in the country should be founded on truth and mutual respect, adding that “We should attack those things that divide us and believe in Nigeria; tribalism would not help us.”

He concluded by saying that the country has achieved a lot at 61, especially when compared to other great nations that are about 200 years old. He said Nigeria would achieve much more if democratic governance is sustained and continuously improved upon.
