GOV'S WIFE, SPEAKER, OTHERS EMBARK ON CAMPAIGN AGAINST VIOLENCE

The wife of the State Governor, Dr. Linda Ayade, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams, and other Lawmakers in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations have embarked on a public walk in support of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) and Disability Rights Bills.


Speaking while flagging-off the Public Walk which started at the Calabar Cenotaph to Watt market and back, Dr. Linda Ayade decried the increased cases of Gender Based and other forms of violence  in the society adding that it has become necessary to have a laid down procedure to punish perpetrators of the menace 

''Considering the increasing incidences of Gender Based Violence..... it has become very important that we come up with a prohibition act....so that those who perpetrate this evil against our women and girls will be brought to book," she said.


Cross River Speaker, Rt Hon Eteng Jonah Williams, in his remarks, emphasized the Assembly's commitment to the VAPP Bill which has passed through the first and second readings, while it's public hearing is slated for 9th December, 2021. He called on stakeholders and members of the public to attend the Public Hearing and assured of a speedy passage of the Bill. 


Earlier, the Sponsor of the Bill, Rt. Hon Regina Anyogo (Yala 1) said the public walk was part of activities to publicize the public hearing of the Bill adding that the Assembly was working towards a speedy passage of the Bill. She commended the State Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade for his dedication to the well being of the citizenry. 


Speaking on behalf of the Civil Society Organizations, Mrs Ndodeye Bassey Obongha expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and all who participated in the Public Walk. She sued for continuous support of the VAPP Bill.
