By George Odok Jnr

The Federal Government of Nigeria under the 2012 budget began the construction of a 3 storey Faculty of Law building in the University of Calabar, Cross River State.

The project was facilitated by the Leader of the 7th National Assembly, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, who represented Cross River Central in the Senate at that time.

When Prof. Obi took over office as the first female and 11th substantial VC of UNICAL in December 2020, she went on a tour of facilities round the institution where she told journalists that, “UNICAL has a bad record of being one of the universities with the highest number of Federal Government funded abandoned projects but we are going to change that tide if God willing. We will not want to leave abandoned projects in the university.

“What you just saw is the abandoned Law Faculty project, work is ongoing and we are very sure that in the next few weeks, the ground and first floor will be ready for staff to move in and when we have more money, the second and third floor will be completed,” she said.

In matching her words with actions, Prof. Obi was continuously visiting the site and seeing for herself the progress of work done so far.

Today, the entire building of the Faculty of Law in Unical is now completed and waiting for the end of ASUU strike for lecturers and students to move in a serene environment for teaching and learning.

The building has mass carrying capacity for students in its various halls, modern conveniences for male and female students, good ventilation system, well arranged desks, good office accommodation for the Dean of the Faculty and other staff, good water running system among many others.

The VC had always described the Law Faculty as one of the flagship programmes of the University, hence her desire to ensure the timely completion of the building within a year that she took over as VC.

Aside this building, there are other numerous projects in the university that have been completed under the leader of the Amazon Prof. Obi that would be commissioned soon.

Indeed, Prof. Obi is critically enhancing the infrastructural development of the citadel of learning.

President of Law Student Association, UNICAL, Elizabeth Idiku, has this to say about the completion of the project….

“The completion of the faculty of law building of the University of Calabar is a dream come true for the entirety of Law students in the university of Calabar.

“For a couple of years now the faculty of law building has been under construction and ofcourse we have witnessed various successive administrations come and go without the completion of that building.

“Today we are glad, to off-course to witness the completion of the building under the distinguish leadership of Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the amiable Vice chancellor of the University of Calabar, also under the leadership of Prof. Cyril Osim Ndifon (The Dean Faculty of Law). This building is significant to the entirety of Law Students in the university of Calabar.

“We are much glad today that we are witnessing this day we all hoped for, in the annal of our history as law students and it is our wish that God blesses the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar for being very proactive, result oriented, goal driven and for being who she is and also the Dean faculty of Law for being an excellent leader who has sailed the ship of the faculty to this glorious heights,” she said.

The LAWSAN President prayed God to bless the faculty, the VC, and the Dean.
