UNICEF ACTIVATES YOMA PROGRAMME IN UNICROSS, CHARGES STUDENTS ON LEARNING TO EARN



Students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) have been charged to embrace the Youth Agency Market Place (YOMA) platform to unlock, build and transform their future, upskill and showcase their skills, make a difference, earn rewards and enrich their CV by taking part in the impact challenges which the platform offers. 



The call for participation in the UNICEF sponsored programme was given on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 during the YOMA Activation Programme held at the New Mass Communication Block of the university. 


The Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Antigha in his goodwill message admonished the students to make good use of the opportunity which the programme presents saying "When you train your hand to do something, you will not be depending on what the country can do for you. This is a platform that you can benefit from."



Speaking on the topic "Generation Unlimited 9ja  using U-Report and YOMA, Mr. Emmanuel Bamidele, the Youth Agency Market Place(YOMA) Representative of UNICEF stated that the platform has the potential to transform students from learning to earning. According to him " For you to be relevant, you need to have the ability to adapt. YOMA is a platform that is under UNICEF with different segments such as the Generation Unlimited which is public and private partnership which upscale students in learning, skills, engage in community access employment. Your activities in the system is verified using Blockchain technology. It has a strong data privacy system. The YOMA programme is one key opportunity that can take you out of Nigeria". 



He added that Students can sign in and create their YOMA account by going to www.yoma.africa and then click on create account and follow the prompt. 



The Cross River State Representative for the Young People Action Team (CYAT), Ms. Blessing Onogen,   introduced the U-Report platform to the students. According to her, it is an interesting platform where students can do survey for UNICEF. She added that "It is a free SMS platform where you do survey with simple questions and answers, make reports about the environment and climate change, get job opportunities". She called on students to sign up and become U-Reporters free of charge using their phones. 


Dr. Victor Ndifon, the UNICROSS coordinator of the programme in his goodwill message stated that the YOMA programme is geared towards equipping students with the requisite skills needed to make them employable. He added that it is not a one-off opportunity as others will follow. He encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity. 


On his part the SUG President, Comrade James Otu in his remark called on students to key into the opportunity saying  "The benefit of YOMA is dependent on every student found here today. Don't take it as a waste of time and don't say no to opportunities and financial freedom".


Highlights  of the event included dance and singing competitions  from students which prizes won and presented to the winners.
