Cross River State to Hold Local Government Elections on October 26, 2024

The Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) has officially announced the date for the highly anticipated local government elections. During a presentation at the Commission’s office in Calabar on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, CROSIEC Chairman Dr. Ekong Boco revealed that the elections will take place on October 26, 2024.

Dr. Boco addressed party chairmen and stakeholders, emphasizing that the demand for revitalizing democratic structures at the local government level has reached a critical point.

He stated, “In response to this urgent call and in accordance with Section 197 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Cross River State Government has reconstituted CROSIEC to oversee the 2024 Local Government Councils Election.”

Reflecting on the Commission's history, he noted that since the return to democracy in 1999, four successful local government elections have been held, specifically in 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2020.

Dr. Boco noted the importance of collaboration among various institutions for a successful electoral process, stating, “Election is not an event but a process which may take months or even years to accomplish successfully.”

He called on all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible election, asserting, “Elections are not war; we need a conducive environment to achieve credible and acceptable outcomes in Cross River State.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, political parties were invited to collect copies of the 2024 Local Government Election timetable, CROSIEC guidelines, and personal data requirements. Candidates will then proceed to obtain their processing forms upon payment of the stipulated fees.

Dr. Boco concluded with a call for cooperation and support in this important journey of grassroots governance, wishing all participants success in their electioneering activities.
