Senator Eteng Jonah Williams’ Sponsorship Powers Govisco Ikom to Victory in Historic Prince Otu Cup 2024

 



The U.J. Esuene Stadium came alive on Friday, November 15, 2024, as Govisco Ikom claimed victory in the first statewide secondary school football tournament, the Prince Otu Cup 2024. This  event was made possible by the esteemed sponsorship of Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, representing the Central Senatorial District.


During the opening ceremony, Hon. Agnes Atu, Commissioner for Sports Development, lauded the efforts of Senator Williams, emphasizing the competition's role in revitalizing sports across the state.


"This is the largest tournament sponsored by an individual, with 40 teams participating," Hon. Atu stated. 


She called on other leaders to join Senator Williams in supporting youth development.


Senator Williams, in his remarks, expressed his commitment to nurturing young talent.


 “I am honoured to contribute to the growth of our children. I envision seeing them in the Super Eagles and other prestigious teams. This competition will continue as part of my unwavering support for the government of Cross River State". Senator stated.


The grand finals, officially kicked off by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey on behalf of Governor Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu. 


After an impressive display of talent on the pitch, Govisco Ikom triumphed over Purity Foundation School with a 2-1 victory in the competition.


Furthermore,  congratulations were extended to the winners:


First Place: Govisco, Ikom LGA – ₦500,000


Second Place: Purity Foundation School, Biase LGA – ₦300,000


Third Place: Government Secondary School, Ogoja LGA – ₦200,000.


The prizes, sponsored by Playcope, were presented by Hon. Ekanem Ekpenyong, Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development.


Also, Hon. Cyril Omini, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, Prof. Owan Enoh, and Sen. Stephen Odey, Sen. Eteng Jonah Williams were among the key figures celebrated for their commitment to youth sports. 


Speaking on behalf of Governor Otu, Prof. Owan Enoh, lauded Senator Williams’ efforts in championing the tournament and encouraged future opportunities for budding athletes.


In his vote of thanks, Hon. Ekanem Ekpenyong confirmed the tournament’s official status as an annual event, promising expanded opportunities for young athletes in subsequent editions.
