The story of Dr. Bassey Paddy Tom is one of unwavering dedication, perseverance, and a passion for societal transformation. From humble beginnings in Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, to earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and taking on leadership roles in academia, politics, and community development, his journey is a testament to the power of determination and hard work.

Born into a close-knit family, Dr. Bassey is the second to the last child and the last son of his parents. The loss of his mother at a young age was a defining moment in his life. However, his father became his greatest pillar of support, providing fatherly, motherly, spiritual, and advisory guidance, which played a crucial role in shaping his character and aspirations.

With a strong drive for education, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work at the University of Calabar. This marked the beginning of a remarkable academic and leadership journey. His thirst for knowledge led him to obtain a Master’s degree in Social Policy and Social Work Administration at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later a PhD, with a research focus on the National Social Investment Program and its impact on the socioeconomic well-being of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, Nigeria. His work provides critical insights into social welfare policies and their real impact on the lives of Nigerians.

While at the University of Calabar, Dr. Bassey was an active student leader, holding key positions that showcased his leadership abilities and commitment to service:

Executive President, National Association of Social Work Students, University of Calabar Chapter – As president, he provided visionary leadership, advocating for students' academic and professional welfare and ensuring the association's growth.

Senator, University of Calabar Student Union Parliament – In this role, he was a strong voice for students' rights and welfare, contributing to policy decisions that improved student life.

His experience in student leadership laid the groundwork for his later political and administrative roles, equipping him with the skills to engage in governance, public policy, and community service.

Dr. Bassey has also played vital roles in local government administration, contributing to grassroots development and governance. His positions include:

Chief of Protocol to the Chairman of Council, Obubra LGA – He ensured the smooth coordination of official protocols and administrative functions within the council.

Special Assistant to the Chairman of Council, Obubra LGA – In this capacity, he provided strategic advisory support to the chairman, helping to implement policies and projects beneficial to the people of Obubra.

His work in local government reinforced his passion for governance and social policy, shaping his perspective on leadership and service delivery.

With his deep academic background in social work, policy, and administration, Dr. Bassey is committed to using research and education to drive positive change. He is poised to shape the next generation of social workers and policymakers. His dedication to knowledge and teaching will contribute significantly to Nigeria’s social development landscape.

Beyond academia, Dr. Bassey is actively involved in politics and community development. As a dedicated member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has played a key role in campaigns, mobilization, and advocacy. He has particularly supported leaders in various positions, recognizing their contributions to peacebuilding, education, and philanthropy.

Amid his professional and academic pursuits, Dr. Bassey is a dedicated family man. Happily married and blessed with children. His ability to balance family life with his career is a testament to his discipline, love, and sense of responsibility.

Engr. Jerome Egbe Visits NSCDC Command for Strategic Partnership on Public Utilities

  The Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on Public Utilities, Engr. Dr. Jerome Egbe, KSM, today, October 8, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Cross River Command, Mr. Brown Charles, in Calabar.  The visit centered on establishing a strategic partnership to protect and secure public utilities across the state from vandals and criminal elements.
