History Made at UNICROSS as Alumni Elect First Governing Council Representative

The Alumni of University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), today exercised a long-awaited right by electing their first representative to the University’s Governing Council. This development marks a major milestone in the history of the university and a victory for the alumni community, who have waited since 2019 for this opportunity.

The law establishing an alumni seat on the Governing Council was passed in 2019 but faced delays in implementation due to various setbacks. However, today’s successful election of Dr. Ofut Ogar as the pioneer Convocation Representative to the Council represents a triumph of resilience and collective determination.

In a statement, the President of the UNICROSS Alumni Association congratulated Dr. Ogar, expressing full confidence in his capacity to serve.

“We look forward to his collaborative efforts with fellow council members to shape policies that will elevate the university’s standing,” the statement read.

To commemorate this historic occasion, the Alumni Association also unveiled a completed infrastructure project that had been stalled for years — four fully functional conveniences located at the ETF and Prefab lecture blocks, widely used for General Studies courses. Though the structures had long been in place, they were without basic facilities such as water supply, equipment, and adequate pathways.

The NEC became aware of the issue approximately two months ago and appealed to the university’s leadership for permission to take over and complete the project. In response, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, approved the request and instructed her technical team to work in close partnership with the Alumni Association.

Demonstrating commendable efficiency, the Alumni completed the project within a month. Their work included structural renovations, the installation of necessary amenities, concrete pathway construction, and borehole drilling. A formal handover to the university is planned, pending the Vice Chancellor’s inspection and approval.

Dr. Inyali Peter, speaking on behalf of the Alumni NEC, lauded Prof. Bassey for her forward-thinking leadership and unwavering support for the Alumni Association.

“Though not an alumnus herself, her encouragement has inspired us to rise to the occasion and give back meaningfully to our alma mater,” he said.

Gratitude was also extended to the Visitor to the university, Governor Bassey Otu, for appointing a Vice Chancellor with a strong commitment to institutional development. The Alumni pledged continued support for the university's growth by complementing government and management initiatives.
