THE POLITICS OF 2027 IN CROSS RIVER CENTRAL AND THE PLACE OF SENATOR ETENG WILLIAMS

By Sonny Ovai

 Early Start or Premature Politics?

It is May 2025, and the political atmosphere in Cross River State is already abuzz. Some believe it's too early to begin politicking for the 2027 elections, arguing that it distracts from governance and the fulfillment of 2023 campaign promises. Others contend there is no such thing as “too early” in politics—early engagement, they say, builds stronger connections with the electorate, particularly for newcomers.

In Cross River Central Senatorial District, the political permutations are heating up -most notably, around how to unseat the incumbent, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams.

Intra-Party Battles and the Yakurr Factor:

Curiously, the strongest opposition to Senator Williams seems to be coming not from rival parties but from within his own party - the All Progressives Congress (APC). Even more surprising is that many of these critics hail from his home base in Yakurr Local Government Area.

A closer look reveals that this is partly rooted in lingering resentment from political figures who lost out in the 2023 elections and a strong sense of entitlement among certain political actors. The campaign against Senator Williams has been waged in both subtle and overt forms - from media propaganda to internal party scheming.

 The Senator's Quiet Resolve:

Despite these challenges, Senator Williams appears unfazed. Since taking office, he has focused on core legislative duties, impactful constituency projects, and maintaining a strong grassroots presence. His style—humble, authentic, and unassuming—may lead some to underestimate him. However, his political history has shown that this, may again work to his advantage.

Senator Williams has consistently stated that his service records will speak for him. Indeed, a growing number of constituents and observers are beginning to echo that belief.

 Reading the Governor’s Signals:

Unsubstantiated rumours abound that Governor Bassey Otu is not entirely aligned with APC National Assembly members from the state. While the Governor has not publicly voiced dissatisfaction, some observers claim his political body language suggests he may prefer loyalists, he can call his "products." Although, as an experienced and pragmatic politician himself, the Governor already knows the benefits of a united and rancour-free party going into the quest for a second term in office.

Additionally, long-term political calculations - such as the 2031 governorship rotation expected to favor Cross River Central - may be influencing current strategies, even if behind closed doors. Still, it all remains speculation for now.

Performance and Legislative Edge:

Senator Williams’ track record in the Senate, though under two years, is marked by the sponsorship of relevant bills, consistent constituency outreach, and political cooperation at the state level. He has not been seen to oppose the Governor, nor disrupt party unity.

Key strengths in his favor include:

_Legislative Experience:_ A three-term member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, where he has served as Speaker, giving him deep legislative understanding. Which has provided him with the foundation for a seamless integration into the workings of the legislative processes of the Senate.

_Seniority Advantage:_ Returning to the Senate as a ranking member enhances his capacity to attract federal projects and influence.

_Collaborative Politics:_ His willingness to work under Governor Otu’s leadership presents him as a team player, not a rival.

_Statewide Recognition:_ His achievements cut across the six LGAs of Central Senatorial District and beyond.

 *The Road to 2027:*

As 2027 approaches, the political terrain in Cross River Central is shaping up to be intriguing. Senator Williams will need to consolidate his incumbency advantage, fortify cross-LGA alliances, and possibly secure the backing of Governor Otu and other influential APC stakeholders.

Although the opposition is currently fragmented, politics is dynamic. A united front - internal or external - can still pose a formidable challenge. In Nigeria's ever-unpredictable political landscape, no outcome is guaranteed.

But one thing is clear: the Cross River Central Senatorial race will be one of the most closely watched contests in the state.
