Cross River State Governor and Visitor to the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the appointment of Professor Francisca Bassey as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.

Her appointment, which takes immediate effect, was based on the recommendation of the University’s Governing Council following what official sources described as a rigorous, transparent and merit-based selection process.

Professor Bassey, a seasoned academic, administrator, and researcher, brings over three decades of experience in higher education. A distinguished alumna of the University of Calabar, she has served in various leadership positions including Head of Department, Dean, and Deputy Vice Chancellor.

According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, Governor Otu’s approval reaffirms his administration’s commitment to competence, meritocracy, and the strategic positioning of Cross Riverians in key leadership roles.

“Her appointment reflects the Governor’s belief that higher institutions must be led by individuals with proven integrity, intellectual depth and a clear vision for development,” the statement read.

Governor Otu congratulated Professor Bassey on her new role and urged her to provide bold, reform-driven leadership that will strengthen the university’s academic reputation, foster innovation, and enhance research outputs.

“You are assuming office at a time when our tertiary institutions must be repositioned to meet global standards,” he said. “We trust that you will lead UNICROSS with excellence and distinction.”

Professor Bassey’s appointment comes at a time when UNICROSS is expanding its academic programmes, deepening partnerships, and working toward infrastructural renewal. Her leadership is expected to consolidate ongoing efforts to reposition the institution as a hub of knowledge and innovation.

She has pledged to work collaboratively with the university community, alumni, and government to uphold standards and pursue a progressive vision for UNICROSS.

The state government reiterated its commitment to supporting the new Vice Chancellor, noting that education remains a key pillar of the “People First” policy of the Otu-led administration.
