Standard Unity Cup Kicks Off as Calabar South 1 Clash with Calabar South 2

The much-anticipated Standard Unity Football Tournament 2025, popularly known as the Suki Unity Cup, officially kicks off today with a thrilling Calabar South derby as Calabar South 1 squares off against Calabar South 2 in the opening playoff match.

The high-stakes encounter will take place today by 4:00 pm at Government Secondary School, Fenton Street, Calabar, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting football spectacle anchored on youth unity and political mobilization.

Organized by Standard Ambassadors (Suki Ambassadors), the tournament is designed to foster unity among youths in the Cross River Southern Senatorial District while rallying support for the current political leadership at both national and state levels.

The competition has received strong support, having been endorsed by the Chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area, Pastor Hon. Patrick Okon Archibong, as well as the Members representing Calabar South Constituencies I and II in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Effiong Ekarika and Hon. Victor Ekpenyong Nsa.

Speaking ahead of the kickoff, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Mr. Effiom Effiwatt, reiterated that the competition is a grassroots initiative driven by associates and supporters within the sphere of influence of Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, and not directly organized by the Senator himself.

He explained that the tournament brings together teams from seven LGAs—Akamkpa, Biase, Odukpani, Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Akpabuyo, and Bakassi, with an additional invitational side, the “Seven Alive” Unity Team, to balance the knockout format.

Today’s playoff between the two Calabar South constituencies will determine who represents the LGA in the knockout stage. Similar playoffs will also be conducted in Akamkpa, which equally has two constituencies.

All matches in the tournament will be played at neutral venues under a strict knockout format to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all teams.

Reaffirming the competition’s professionalism, Secretary of the Cross River Football Association, Mr. Talabi Okey, confirmed that graded referees will officiate the matches, with full application of FIFA laws, emphasizing discipline, sportsmanship, and zero tolerance for violence.

As the whistle blows today, expectations are high that football will once again serve as a powerful tool for unity, youth engagement, and collective purpose in Cross River South.

Kickoff: 4:00 pm

Venue: Government Secondary School, Fenton Street, Calabar

⚽ Kicking together, winning together.
