IWD: UNICROSS VC Seeks Greater Political Inclusion, Support For Women Aspiring To Leadership Positions

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Professor Francisca Bassey, has highlighted the need for greater political inclusion and support for women aspiring to leadership positions.

Professor Bassey made the call in Abuja during the launch of “HER Unity Circle” by the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), held as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration.

She noted that “Nigerian women have shown capacity and competence in leadership across several sectors. If the masses believe in their abilities, they should allow them to lead.

The VC who called on women to embrace unity and collaboration as key drivers of leadership and national development, urged them to mentor younger women in order to build a stronger and more inclusive society.

Explaining that the theme of the event, “Her Power, Our Unity: Empowerment, Leadership and National Transformation,” was timely, she emphasized that women can achieve greater progress when they work together rather than compete with one another.

Professor Bassey is an Old Girl of Federal Government Girls’ College Bauchi and an active member of Federal Government Girls’ College Bauchi Old Girls Association (FEBOGA).

Also speaking at the event, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, represented by Fatima Mahmood, Permanent Secretary,  Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, urged women to take advantage of leadership opportunities while calling on men to support women as partners in progress.

Earlier, the President-General of USOSA, Michael Magaji, said the event was organised to highlight the role of women in national development and to encourage greater participation of women in leadership and decision-making.

Also speaking, USOSA Vice President-General, Barrister Chinedu Amure, said the newly launched “HER Unity Circle” would serve as a platform to strengthen networking, mentoring and empowerment among women within the association.
