Duke Calls for Policies to Strengthen Responsible Parenting

The Cross River State Representative on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Otuekong Orok Otu Duke, PhD, has called on governments at all levels to formulate and implement policies that promote responsible parenting and strengthen family values across the country.

Duke made the call in a message commemorating this year's Father's Day celebration, where he emphasized the critical role parents, particularly fathers, play in shaping the moral, social, and economic future of society.

According to him, fatherhood extends beyond the provision of basic needs and encompasses mentoring, nurturing, protecting, and instilling values that help raise responsible and productive citizens.

He noted that strong families remain the foundation of stable communities and prosperous nations, stressing that governments and institutions must create enabling environments that support parents in effectively carrying out their responsibilities.

"Fatherhood is a sacred responsibility that goes beyond providing for the family. It involves nurturing, mentoring, protecting, and instilling values that help raise responsible citizens," Duke stated.

The former Lawmaker observed that many families are facing increasing social and economic pressures, making it imperative for policymakers to introduce family-friendly initiatives, social support systems, and programmes that encourage responsible parenting and child development.

He paid tribute to fathers and father figures who continue to make sacrifices for the well-being of their families despite prevailing challenges, describing them as unsung heroes whose efforts contribute significantly to societal stability and national development.

Duke also urged fathers to remain steadfast in their responsibilities by serving as positive role models for the younger generation and upholding the virtues of integrity, discipline, hard work, and compassion.

"As we celebrate Father's Day, let us recognize the invaluable contributions of fathers and guardians who dedicate themselves to raising future leaders and responsible citizens. Their sacrifices deserve appreciation and support," he said.

He further called on communities, religious institutions, and civil society organizations to complement government efforts in promoting family cohesion, positive parenting, and the moral upbringing of children.

The Community Leader expressed optimism that stronger family structures would help address many of the social challenges confronting society while fostering peace, unity, and sustainable development.

Father's Day is celebrated globally to honour fathers and father figures for their contributions to family life and society.
