First Lady Commissions TETFUND ICT Experience Centre Renewed Hope Initiative at UNICROSS

 

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, on Friday, September 4, 2026, commissioned the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) ICT Experience Centre Renewed Hope Initiative at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Calabar.

The commissioning ceremony attracted the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu; his wife, the First Lady of Cross River State, Her Excellency Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu; several First Ladies of States; Senator John Owan Enoh, Minister of State for Industry, State and Investment;



Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa,

Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy; Dr. Mansur Muhtar, OFR, Chairman of the Bank of Industry; Chairman of the TETFUND Board of Trustees, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari; and the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Arch. Dr. Sonny Echono.

Also in attendance were the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem; Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State; Hon. Sunny Etta, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State;

Dr. Betta Edu, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; members of the TETFUND Board of Trustees including Hon. Aboh Uduyok, representing South-South; Service Commanders, Commissioners, wife of AIG Rasheed Bello Afegbua, AIG Zone 6, Royal Fathers and other dignitaries, as well as members of the University community.

The arrival of Governor Otu at the venue was greeted with excitement as he moved around the gathering, exchanging greetings with students, staff and other guests.

Commissioning the Centre, Her Excellency Senator Tinubu, dedicated the facility to the glory of God and its benefit to the students of the University.

She said: “To the glory of God and the benefit of all students of this institution, it is my honour and privilege to commission the ICT Centre in University of Cross River State. God bless everyone. Our children should know that this is what the future holds for them.”

The First Lady thereafter toured the facility alongside the Governor, the First Lady of Cross River State and other dignitaries. The Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, led the delegation through the Centre, highlighting its facilities and potential to support teaching, learning, research, creativity and digital innovation.

During the tour, Her Excellency Senator Tinubu, the Governor, First Ladies of States and other dignitaries commended the cultural and artistic displays produced by the Department of Visual Arts and Technology and displayed within the Centre.

The First Lady of Nigeria stressed the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural identity while advancing technologically. She also commended the leadership of Prof. Bassey.

Senator Tinubu disclosed that the UNICROSS facility was the second ICT Experience Centre under the Renewed Hope Initiative to be commissioned by the current administration, while other similar ICT projects will equally be commissioned soon.

The First Lady and members of her entourage later moved around the venue, warmly and cheerfully exchanging greetings with guests and members of the University community.

The TETFUND ICT Experience Centre is a notable addition to the University’s infrastructure and reflects the Renewed Hope Initiative’s emphasis on expanding access to modern educational and digital resources for young Nigerians.

The successful delivery of the Centre also represents a significant milestone for the Prof. Francisca Bassey administration. 

Through strategic engagement with TETFUND and other stakeholders, the Vice Chancellor played an important role in facilitating the establishment and completion of the facility at UNICROSS.

Her efforts and collaboration with the First Lady of Cross River State, significantly contributed in bringing the First Lady of Nigeria to commission the Centre.

The commissioning provided UNICROSS with a valuable opportunity to showcase its achievements, facilities and capabilities, while enhancing the University’s visibility and profile at the national level.

The Vice Chancellor presented Her Excellency Senator Tinubu with a commemorative plaque, Efik traditional gifts and a specially designed Adire fabric bearing the First Lady's name and the UNICROSS crest, symbolising the University’s appreciation of her visit and the cultural heritage of Cross River State.

The ceremony was enlivened by colourful performances by cultural groups and students of the University, adding a rich cultural dimension to the historic occasion.

​UNICROSS Announces 2026/2027 Post-UTME Screening, Introduces 19 New Programmes

​The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has officially announced the commencement of its First Choice Admission Screening Exercise for the 2026/2027 academic session .
