IPAC Removes Effiom Edet as Chairman Over Alleged Financial Misconduct, Omari Takes Over




The leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has impeached its Chairman, Effiom Edet, over allegations of gross financial misconduct, high-handedness, incompetence, abuse of office and lack of accountability.

Edet was removed from office on Wednesday 2nd September 2026, following a majority motion at a long-awaited meeting of the council held at the IPAC state secretariat, with 16 state party chairmen in attendance.

The members reportedly questioned Edet’s leadership style, accusing his administration of operating in secrecy and failing to adequately consult other political party chairmen on decisions affecting the council.

One of the issues raised was his recent meeting with officials of CRISSA, during which he was alleged to have unilaterally endorsed what members described as exorbitant fees for opposition political parties seeking to paste campaign banners and posters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former chairman was also accused of failing to account for ₦84 million reportedly released by the state government and other partners for voters’ sensitisation.

The development is not the first time Edet has faced an impeachment attempt. According to members of the council, he was removed from office for similar allegations about two years ago during his first tenure, before the intervention of key stakeholders facilitated his return.

Members further alleged that Edet had a pattern of taking decisions without adequate consultation with the council or adherence to due process.

Following his removal, Comrade Fredrick Omari, the state chairman of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), was appointed the new IPAC chairman, while Prince Victory Okoi, chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), was appointed secretary.

The council, under its new leadership, pledged to work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to promote a peaceful, transparent and credible 2027 general election.

The allegations against Edet could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report, and he may have an opportunity to respond to the claims.
