CRSHIA Proposes Health Insurance Coverage for UNICROSS Community

 


The Cross River State Health Insurance Agency (CRSHIA) on Friday, October 2, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), with a proposal to extend health insurance coverage to members of the University community.

Leading the delegation, the Director-General of CRSHIA, Chief (Sir) Godwin Iyala, said the visit was aimed at exploring a partnership that would provide affordable and accessible healthcare coverage for staff and students.

Chief Iyala explained that the initiative was designed to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on individuals and families, adding that the Agency was prepared to collaborate with the University and accredit the institution’s health centre to facilitate access to healthcare services for beneficiaries.

He also highlighted the Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHE), which is designed to provide health insurance coverage for members of tertiary institutions, and stressed the importance of collective responsibility in improving access to healthcare.

Responding, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Administration), Prof. Thomas Ojikpong, who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, expressed appreciation to the Agency for the initiative.

Prof. Ojikpong described the proposed partnership as a welcome development, stressing the importance of good health to the wellbeing and productivity of members of the University community. He noted that health insurance was an established means of reducing the financial burden of healthcare and expressed optimism about the benefits of the proposed collaboration.

He also commended the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, for initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents of the State.

The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism about a possible partnership that would enhance access to quality and affordable healthcare services for staff and students of UNICROSS.

Other attendees included the Registrar, Mrs Catherine Osai Ndifon; the Bursar, Mr Wilson Aniyom; Prof. Babson Ajibade, immediate Past Director of Academic Planning; and the Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebri Onen Ebri.

Also present from CRSHIA were the Head of Public Relations and Strategy, Mrs Aje Ayuk Asam; Director of Accounts, Mr Raymond Abugioye; Director of Information and Communication Technology, Dr John Ekanem; and other officials.
